T43 hangs on use of USB external drive

#1 Post by bencampmovim » Mon Apr 11, 2005 9:30 am

I have a maxtor onetouch 200gb external drive.

I use it with no problems with my dell desktop and (r.i.p.) my dell laptop.

I just purchased a T43, and now i can only use the T43 for about 20 minutes with the drive plugged in before windows completely hangs (screen stays frozen with whatever windows was doing, the only way to fix it is to power down)

If i DON'T have the drive plugged in, the computer doesn't crash.

any ideas?

Ben-

Try this:

With the drive plugged into the computer, go into Control Panels... administrative tools.... computer management... storage... disk manager.

You should see your USB2 drive there. Right click on it and bring up Properties. Bring up the Policies tab and see if it is optimized for quick removal, or for performance. Also see if write caching is enabled.

Try it optimized for quick removal and no write caching. See if the problem doesn't happen while working in this mode. If this improves the situation, probably there is a flaky cable or similar fault between the drive and the computer. Let us know.
