poor wireless connection with T42

#1 Post by sputnik611 » Tue Apr 12, 2005 6:21 am

Hi all --

Can anybody give me some wireless advice? I have a T42, an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG card, and a Linxys WRT54G router. I am using IBM Access Connections to manage my wireless connections.
So here's my problem -- as long as I'm 10 feet away from my router, my signal is strong and my connection is fine. But as soon as I move into another room, the signal gets weak and the connection keeps dropping. It's quite annoying. A friend of mine brought over his Dell laptop and had no problem staying connected while I was getting dropped.
My question is: is there anything I can do to fix this problem? Upgrades, settings changes, anything? Please keep in mind that I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff, so forgive me if I left out (or misstated) any pertinent information. Thanks much!

Open up the palmrest and check the WiFi card's connections. I've seen 3 new machines recently where the antennae connections were loose or not connected at all!

Report back.

How do you open up the palm rest? I want to be sure I know what I'm doing so I don't screw things up too badly. Thanks.

I found the connection improved when I stopped using Access Connections and let Windows control the wireless connection.

As an extra bonus I got rid of 2 annoying icons in the system tray (one for Access Connections, one for Intel).

Have u tried update the latest wireless driver from IBM? (I think the blue access IBM button on Thinkpad will lead u to the download page) I've seen some user report saying the connection improved in 2200BG by just upgrading that.

Another improvement I found out at home, if your Linksys access point is near Microwave or 2.4G wireless phone, the performance will be poorly degraded.

I have a Danish Windows so the translation may be off.

But from the Window "Wireless network connections" I click "Change advanced settings" (in the panel to the left). This calls up the windows called "Settings for wireless network connection". Open the tab "wireless network" and put a mark in the top box ("Use Windows to configure the wireless network"). Hope this helped. If not, maybe someone with US Windows can help.
