t42p 2373 Q1U Running Hot; Fan running
t42p 2373 Q1U Running Hot; Fan running
When this was about a year old, I had to replace the fan - has FireGL, so long fan. Not a problem. Lately, I'll be web browsing and it just shuts off. I installed some temperature monitoring software; running in the 65-80 degree range when web browsing? Seems hot - should I just replace the fan?
How about some other good monitoring software for the temperatures? Speed Fan tells me it's running 71 C right now as I am browsing here. Seems freaking hot, to me.....
So, to sum up:
Just replace fan?
Better Temp Monitoring software?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!
You should try cleaning the fan prior to replacing it. TPFC is well-loved piece of software amongst many users here:
http://tpfancontrol.com/
Install it and report back both the CPU and GPU temperatures.
Also, how many processes you have running on a freshly booted machine?
Good luck.

Thanks for the tip on tpfancontrol.
Right now, after boot up after install tpfancontrol:
CPU: 69 C
GPU: 59 C
Fan speed: 3679 RPM
Processes - 87 (yeah, I know, too many)
Too tired tonite; will rip case open tomorrow and clean fan.
Thanks again!

Re: t42p 2373 Q1U Running Hot; Fan running
My wild guess would be a software-related issue, something pushing the CPU to uncomfortable levels, but cleaning the fan would still be my first move.

So, are the temps out of line - or where they should be?

Re: t42p 2373 Q1U Running Hot; Fan running
I have a T42p 2373-Q1U as well, and I am using Notebook Hardware Control to undervolt the CPU (and I have also downclocked the GPU a bit). My CPU idles around 40 C and the GPU idles around 47 C for an ambient temperature of 20 C. I am (of course) running the CPU in the "Balanced" mode. I suggest you search this forum for "Notebook Hardware Control" - as a start you can have a look in this or this.
NHC is a much better program compared to ThinkPad Fan control, as the latter has no options to adjust neither the CPU voltage nor the GPU clock speed.
