Artefacts on T43p screen
Artefacts on T43p screen
Hello everyone!
I have a T43p with a 1600x1200 screen. Today, artefacts started to appear on the screen. They are visible on external monitor too, and also on a screenshot (below). Their size scales if I lower the resolution, they are larger with smaller resolutions.

Any idea what's the problem? Sorry if this is a trivial question, I wasn't able to find an answer browsing the forum.

Welcome to the forum!
That's a failing GPU and your machine needs a motherboard replacement.
Good luck.

Thx for the info!
Re: Artefacts on T43p screen
I'm now searching for a replacement motherboard and wondering which one to get. The FRU on the current MB is 42T0073 and the type on the bottom of the laptop says 2668-CTO. Is any other motherboard compatible with 2668-CTO in service manual also good? I'm having hard time to find the exact same MB. I'm thinking about getting a 39T0466.

Re: Artefacts on T43p screen
The exact same board is not a requirement.
Any T43p board will work just fine regardless of FRU number.

Check out the list of T4x motherboards on my website: http://www.theboardroom.info/ibm_list.htm
Check specifically for T43/R52. They will all fit, but not all are suitable for all LCDs.
Any ATI board will do, but Intel boards can only drive all sizes XGA and only 15" SXGA+.
I have some R52 mobos with Intel graphics in stock, but no T43/R52 with ATI.

Re: Artefacts on T43p screen
I repair these chips using a process called Infrared reballing; more information here.
However it depends on whether the GPU has been bonded to the motherboard with strips of clear epoxy. Take the kbrd out and look along the edge of the GPU (the one under the heatsink), and if you see opaque lines of glue along the GPU sides, this is clear epoxy which we're unable to remove to repair the chip.
If there are red, black or orange glue dots around the chip, these are no problem and we can remove these chips to repair them.
We've done a lot of successful repairs for people in Finland, so if you're interested in more information etc, either PM me or email to nick at reflowrepairs.com
