No "Sterep Mix" choice on T42!

I've read the HUGE closed thread on the t60 series Thinkpads, and have a similar question on my T42!

If I reload WIN XP Pro, and do not load the SoundMax audio drivers . . .

1) will I have any sound at all (generic audio drivers from XP)?

2) if so, will this get around the no "Stereo Mix" as I would like to use Audacity to record from the internet!

Or is theee anothere way to re-acquire the stereo mix option?

What was the purpose in removing it anyway, it's my laptop!

Having just today done a complete reinstall on a thinkpad, no there will be no audio unless you install the Soundmax drivers.
