Need help on Nov ATI 1600x1200 driver install

#1 Post by kc » Thu Apr 14, 2005 12:09 pm

First, thanks to the forum for all the great help allowing me to upgrade to a 1600x1200 dvi external monitor. I'm having trouble with the driver upgrades and welcome advice.

I've taken the shortcut and installed the "November" ATI drivers posted on the thinkpads.com FTP (I have a T42 9600 Radeon). Following instructions on the Thinkpad site, I uninstalled all the old ATI software (using Install/Uninstall) and after several reboots installed the new ATI package (and version numbers seem to indicate a successful install).

My issue (before even getting to the external monitor) with the new driver --the look of the LCD monitor is completely fouled up. I was using a variety of custom settings to improve readability (DPI = 129%, some slight enlargement in font sizes (9 vs.8) with my old drivers. With the new drivers (which seemed to retain those settings, but even after adjustment), everything on the screen is noticably smaller -- almost like the resolution is greater than the indicated 1400x1050. For instance, my icons filled my desktop with the old driver, and barely fill half with the new driver.

Before I tackle the external monitor or tweaking the new driver appearance settings, have I done something wrong? Is this the expected result? Should I simply move to the Catalyst mod approach?

Thanks again to all.

Ken

(BTW, I used a restore point to revert back to the original driver for now)
