I've taken the shortcut and installed the "November" ATI drivers posted on the thinkpads.com FTP (I have a T42 9600 Radeon). Following instructions on the Thinkpad site, I uninstalled all the old ATI software (using Install/Uninstall) and after several reboots installed the new ATI package (and version numbers seem to indicate a successful install).
My issue (before even getting to the external monitor) with the new driver --the look of the LCD monitor is completely fouled up. I was using a variety of custom settings to improve readability (DPI = 129%, some slight enlargement in font sizes (9 vs.
