t42 and system board error - most common causes?

#1 Post by rychuu » Wed Feb 29, 2012 5:20 pm

I have a thinkpad t42 and after that when I tried to start it says the system board error.

Code: Select all

One long and two short beeps, and a blank or unreadable LCD.

    System board
    LCD assembly
    DIMM
I have put one DIMM into basic DIMM slot - DIMM chip is working pulled from other computer.
This is computer with 1024x768 display. My friend has t40's with 1400x1050. May should I swap these lcds to check? Is it possible to tell 'system board error' when only display is not working?

What could be the most common cause of such accidents? I do not know if anything can still do it? That I've got. Currently I do not have another computer, so that working could be useful to me.

regards
I am using Lenovo t410 2518-4ju.

best regards

It is *very* unlikely that the LCD is your problem. I'd be betting on a motherboard.

Sure, you can try swapping the lids, but chances are that your ThinkPad needs a planar swap, or that you need a new laptop altogether.

Good luck.

Most common? Well, breakdown of the solder ball grid array that hold the GPU to the motherboard. Second, same breakdown of the SouthBridge chip solder balls. You could test to see if this is the case by lifting the keyboard and applying pressure to the GPU chip or the Southbridge chip as you try to boot the PC. If it boots, then you know where the problem is.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E
