What does model number mean? T42 2373-6VU, 5TUetc

#1 Post by elzny » Thu Apr 14, 2005 7:15 pm

Hello All,

I'm SO glad to find this forum. I'm a newbie to Thinkpads, after having used Dell & Sony junks for the past 3 years, I was first exposed to a Thinkpad at work and shocked to see the difference.

The one I use at work is an R50, so I want to get a lighter & thinner one for personal use. So I'm looking at the T series. I considered the X40 but the fact it doesn't have a CD/DVD drive turned me away. So now I'm considering a T42 2373 5TU refurbished from one of the partner seller of IBM.

My first questions is what is the difference among all these 2373, 2378 etc numbers, I'm guessing it must be the difference in configurations, does that mean one is better than the other? or one is newer than the other?

Second: what do these 6VU, 5TU, CCV etc etc mean?

Third: what does the "p" mean in 42p or 43p?

Many thanks.

EL

This is what I know about model numbers.

My own ThinkPad is a 2373-12U. The first four digits (2373) refer to a general machine type, and the last three characters refer to the configuration. The letter on the end stands for the country that model is designated for (e.g. U means United States).

The 'p' stands for "performance", although many have commented that it also stands for price!
