T42 & 27" external LCD

#1 Post by jwege » Thu Mar 15, 2012 12:27 pm

Hi all,

I have got a 27" Dell LCD Display (shall be used with another machine later) and i am trying to use it with the T42 (with 1400x1050 native resolution).

It has an IPS Panel of native 2560x1440 Pixels and I try to use it on the VGA Port of the T42.

Here are my questions:

1.) The maximum Display Size I could figure to work out so far is 2048x1152 @60 Hz. Which is far from what want but better than nothing. Any chance to change that - preferrably to the native 2560x1440?

2.) Having it running, the Screen (Deskop etc) seems to be bigger than the Monitor's physical Borders. When I move the mouse vertical and reach the lower border of the panel, the Screen scrolls up showing more area "down", hiding area "up".

Using a Screen capture util, I can see that the visible Size is 2048x1152. When Shooting the Window completely, the Pic is sized 2048x1536.

Are there recommendadtions how to use? In the actual settings, the letters etc. in the text editor are quite big, could be significantly less offering more space for more Windows/Apps.

Thanks for any hints
Juergen

You will need the proper graphics driver and probably presentation director installed to get those higher resolutions. The Windows standard graphics driver just won't do it, if that's what you are using.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

I have that exact same monitor, the Dell U2711. 2048x1152 is the highest that VGA input to this monitor can go. You need either DisplayPort or dual-link DVI to get 2560x1440.

Thanks for the hints.

I have Presentation Manager Installed and also the drivers (I have not found any newer drivers).

So, seems that there's no way for the older PC's to go to the high def through VGA.

Thanks anyhow!

The VGA interface can never output more than 2048x1536, no matter how new the computer is.

"High def" is just 1366x768, and VGA can support that. Your U2711's 2560x1440 is way higher than "high def".

@pianowizard:
Seems I was mislead by the German Wikipedia Site http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA-Anschluss where they state that VGA could support 2560x1440:
Generell ist der VGA-Anschluss für hohe Auflösungen bis 400 MHz Videobandbreite geeignet; dies reicht für die Darstellung von 2560 x 1440 Pixeln bei einem Bildseitenverhältnis von 16:9 und einer Bildfrequenz von 75 Hz aus.
Which the english Wiki does not state (but I did not investigate).

Well, reliable information seems not so easy to be aquired these days ...

That paragraph is absolutely incorrect. For 16:9, the highest that VGA can support is 2048x1152. For 4:3, VGA can support up to 2048x1536. The 2048x1536 limit of VGA is universally known.
