T43 Optimization Question

Hi,

I realise that this question has been raised before; however, I have not found a satisfying asnwer just yet. Hence, please bear with me ... again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am going to receive my T43 pretty soon, I would like to know what I can do to optimize the performance of my first ever ThinkPad with respect to boot time, efficiency (via minimizing the number of processes running simultaneoulsy), etc.

(1) If I elect to employ the altnernative method to fresh installing Windows XP, what are the specific software that you guys think I should uninstall without endangering the stability of my system? With respect to the accumulation of registries, does software such as Norton System Works provide any remedy? Please provide a link or detailed instruction how to go about doing this.

(2) If I elect the fresh install route, whose instruction is readily assessible in this forum, how do I pick and choose the IBM-proprietary software such as hard drive protection, security, ... after installing a fresh copy of Windows XP?

As for IBM proprietary software, you can find the ones you need here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... PAD-MATRIX. Look through the T43 list of software and drivers and download the ones you want.

Optimization has more to do with setting the software correctly rather than eliminating it. I use the PreLoad, updated all the drivers, patched it and then uninstalled Norton Retail, installed Symantec Client Security; uninstalled Java SDK, and installed the newest Java Standard Edition. I set auto updates not to. I stopped IBM Messenger from starting. Otherwise, everything runs, and my CPU usage is always zero unless I am actively doing something.

I would make sure Access Connections and the wireless NIC software is up-to-date and works. Access Connections is a highly useful piece of software if you run both wireless and wired networks as I do.

I don't think Norton Systems Work comes with a T machine, and I would not use it. I have never seen it run satisfactorily or do any useful.

I load Client Security, Access Connection, IKE VPN, Cache Sentry Pro, FreeMem Pro, DU Meter, two NIC drivers, and other stuff at start, so my machine takes a while to start. Otherwise it runs exceedingly fast in use.

I run AdAware Pro SE daily to a schedule in Silent Mode, I run Client Security daily to a schedule in Silent Mode, I run Perfect Disk daily as a service, and the machine runs very smoothly as a result.

If your machine doesn't have it, get the 7200-rpm hard drive. Best thing you can do for it.

If you wish to install without IBM, by all means do so. No one has ever proven to me that it is better - just different and more work. You need to do the install, update all the basic video, audio, NIC, EC, BIOS, ACPI and other drivers, add HD protection, power management software and Access Connections. The rest of the IBM software doesn't use any resource, so nothing gained there.
