Hard drive utility/repair

#1 Post by burns334 » Sun Apr 22, 2012 8:58 am

I've got a drive that I cannot install an OS on, everytime I try it bombs, yet if I put it in my "rocket" enclosure I can see everything that is on it. Can someone suggest a utility that they like to try to repair a problem like this?

I suggest running hard drive diagnostics on it, such as PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD...there's a good chance that the drive itself is defective.

Hey burns...what exactly happens when you try to install an OS? Are you trying to install and leave your files intact? In addition to what ajkula66 suggested, you might want to try using the HDD utility provided by your drive manufacturer, to prep the drive prior to OS installation. BTW, what is the OS you are trying to install, and is there an OS already on this drive?

Thanks AK, Niel, It just says it can't complete the operation and quits in the middle of disk 1. I'll put it in the enclosure and run PC Doctor first and let you guys know, thanks again

If you have the DOS bootable disk, you can actually install the disk in the laptop, and then run the utility...

Good luck.
