add 1GB RAM to T42

I have a T42 2373 with 512KB RAM. I want to add 1GB compatible RAM.
I opened the RAM cover on the bottom of unit and it is empty, si I assume the present 512KB RAM is all under the keyboard. Is there any problem i adding a sigle 1GB RAM chip in the empty slot?
In other words, is it OK if the two chips - under the keyboard and in the slot on the bottom - are not identical?
