Question about mixing ram on the T series

#1 Post by pae77 » Tue Apr 19, 2005 2:09 pm

I want to add 512 of memory to my current machine (a T30) but eventually I will be getting a T42 or T43 and was wondering if I could buy a memory module that would work in both machines, without slowing down the faster computer? If so, what type (not brand) should I be getting?

The T30 will happily run with PC2700 RAM. That's what's in mine.

Only runs at PC2100 speed though.

Both the T30 and the T40, 41, and 42 use DDR-SDRAM. You should be able to buy DDR-SDRAMs that will work in any of these machines. You can buy a module that is rated for a fast speed and run it at a slower speed. You cannot generally run a slow module (like PC2100) at a faster speed (like PC2700).

The T43 uses DDRII-SDRAM. DDRII is electrically and physically incompatible with DDR, so if you buy a DDR module for your T30, you will not be able to transfer it to a T43.

Thanks a bunch. 512 of PC2700 ram is on the way. Since the price is about the same, I figure I might as well buy memory that will work in more systems.
