2MB or 1MB cache
Hi!
Thinking of getting an T41p or T42. Since 735 has 2MB cache and the T41p 1.7 GHz P M has 1MB, I just wanted some opinions on whether the difference would be noticeable. T41p has the Fire GL card and faster harddrive. T42 Radeon 9600. Both 1,7 GHz P M.

If it is for the same price, get the T41p.migo2137 wrote:Hi!

The other difference is that you are going from a Banias Pentium M to a Dothan Pentium M.
Yes, Dothan only gives you like 5-10% better performance. But that combined with the newer architecture and better battery life (It is build on a smaller manufacuring process and has more optimizations to conserve power) leads me to recommend you not bother with buying old technology.
If you're on a budget and you've got a great deal, go for it. Otherwise, splurge the extra $ and get a Dothan based laptop.

Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...
The 7k60 will give a far greater benefit than the Dothan, unless he decides to upgrade the processor and drive later.fbrdphreak wrote:The other difference is that you are going from a Banias Pentium M to a Dothan Pentium M.

hi
I had the same question & went for T41p.
Dothan gives less than 5% advantage, but only for some applications if you compare 1.7 Banias vs 1.7 Dothan (735). Many applications are quite happy with 1MB cache.
The nicer part comes when you get 7K60. Definitely 7K60 would be cheaper now, bacause 7K100 will be available in a month. 7K100 will be very expensive, I discourage you to get it for the next 1 year.
Don't forget the Dothan vs Banias price difference. You definitely save a lot.

Parthiban.

Well, I compared a T41p with a T42pand the 15' T42p has longer battery life (5,7h) than 14' T42p. The TPD00023-WWEN-02.pdf claims that 14' has approx. "up to 5,5h" on 9-cell. With a 14' and Ultrabay slim batt. or Enhanced batt. it´s 8,0h on t42p but the T41p gets 8,6h. The T42 (2373-FVU) has longer life: up to 7,5h on 9-cell.fbrdphreak wrote:Are the screen's the same? Keep in mind a 15" XGA or 14" XGA/SXGA+ will use less power than a 15" SXGA+/UXGA.

It´s probably not noticeable in every day use.
Btw: How hard/difficult would it be to change the processor in the future?

I've read posts where people upgraded their Banias Pentium M to a Dothan model fairly easily. I know that the T4x system board uses a ZIF socket of some sort so I imagine it is pretty easy.

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

That is really odd that T41 would be listed as having better battery life than a T42 w/same screens & batteries. Perhaps they changed their testing techniques? Regardless, if you can go w/Dothan do it! :pmigo2137 wrote:Well, I compared a T41p with a T42pand the 15' T42p has longer battery life (5,7h) than 14' T42p. In regards to changing the processor, it is possible, but I believe the only limiting factor may be the BIOS.
