battery/AC invesion

#1 Post by JanBros » Tue May 22, 2012 2:13 pm

Hi all,

I found this forum while googeling my T43 2669 problem. I looked arround and here is some great info, but I couldn't find my problem.
I'm from Belgium, so my English isn't perfect - excuses upfront for that

Since a couple of days , I have a weird problem. When the laptop is running on AC, it says it is on batteries. When I unplug the AC adapter, it says the power source changed and is now running on AC - allthough it is not plugged in . If i plug it in again, it "switches" to batteries. I can do this infinite.

When the AC is in and "running on batteries" as shown in power meter, the battery is effectivly charging allthough power meter doesn't say so. And when the AC is out, power meter says it is on AC and that the battery is charging, but off course it is not. (I'm using XP pro btw).

So this isn't a too big problem if everything stays like this : i switched the power schemes between plugged in and batteries so I save power when I'm on "AC" (but actually running on batteries). But this results in one new problem : the laptop thinks it's on AC so it will not sound alarms when the battery is running flat. And it's happened twice that I lost some work done on the laptop because it suddenly shut's down because of lack of power :?

anybody have an idea as to what causes this problem ? it isn't the ACadapter as the laptop will boot on it without the battery in and it effectivly charges the battery. So that leaves motherboard or battery. I have only one battery so I can't try with another one.

EDIT : just been playing with it and watching what it does : when things are "inversed" with the AC in and the battery charging, when it reaches +/- 90% charged, it bleeps saying the power source has changed and is as it should be (AC in and displaying AC). pulling the AC out and back in at that moment, everything stays correct. It is only when the battery is below +/- 80% it changes back to the "inverse operation" :?

Welcome to the forums.

It's probably a broken component on the motherboard, and in particular I'd suspect a faulty battery charging chip - sorry I don't have information to hand as to which one it is but it's a large rectangular chip near the DC Connector Cable.

What happens if you remove the battery and run it just on AC?

I'd also say that if you can live with the way it is now to do nothing, and remember to keep the AC Adapter plugged in and on "battery"!

it works pretty normal and says it's on AC. But it seems to want to change powersource. sometimes it constantly makes bleeping sounds (from power changes, allthough there is no battery in then).

another problem : when it's off and the battery is in, the battery led is on and something slowly drains the battery. In order to keep the battery charged, I have to take it out if it's not plugged in.

these are all "small discomfort" problems, but if you all ad them up, they are are beginning to enoy me very much :? maybe it's just time for another one, allthough it still does everything I need it to do and I have no reason for an upgrade.
