noisy T42 2373-3XU??
I have used T40, it's completely quiet.
But my T42 is always noisy, whatever the application. It's not the 5400rpm hdd,b/c after i detach it, the noise is still there.
Someone said it's the fan for display card (ATI 9600 mobile), is that correct? how to tune it ? I prefer quiteness that graphic performance.
thanks.
ps. i saw 2 kinds of voices here: one claimed that T42 was quiet, the other was like mine sort. what's the reason? besides, i have updated all BIOS, embedded controller version to the lastest.

T42 Noise and Vibration
Just upgraded from a T40 to a T42 (Model 2378REU). I am considering returning the machine because among other things it is very noisy in normal operation and has an annoying vibration all the time. The vibration is noticable through your hands on the palm rest.

Strange enough!
could you tell me your display chipset? 9600?whatsinthename wrote:what? were you listening to the laptop using a sthethescope or what...T42 is silent as hell dude...i have been using mine for 1.5 years.....no problems
did you notice that in this forum, half of T42 user complained about the noise of T42?
anyway, have you ever used T40?

Re: T42 Noise and Vibration
yes, the same feeling. my goal is to tune the display chipset to a lower frequency to stop the fan. any interests?twinbuttes wrote:Just upgraded from a T40 to a T42 (Model 2378REU). My T42 is completely quiet. (Look my sig for specs). I literally have to put ears on the palm rest to hear any noise from the HD. As far the fan goes it will ony turn on at high speed when the temperature goes above about 48 C. This is the quietest notebook I have ever come across in my life.
Is your TP in adaptive mode? If it is in high performance mode it is possible that the fan will be on most of the time due to higher operating temperature.
Use battery maximizer to add a adaptive configuration for CPU and also turn on the power play mode for the graphics card. This will not affect the performance whatsoever. If this does not solve your problem there is something wrong with your T42 or you have not set it right.
Some people have complained about noise in T42, but that is not half of the people in this forum. Most of those, supposely noise issues, have been solved either by changing configuration or using the version of BIOS that does not cause this problem.
If changing your configuration does not solve the problem you should check out your hardware for possible problems.
Oh, I forgot to mention, if you have not cleaned your TP for a long time, and work in a dusty environment, I would suggest to spend sometime to cleaning the fan. Significant dust accumulation can cause increased fan noise.

thx for your info. i tried all you listed but no positive feedback. the noise it definitely not from hdd(i mount 2 hdds in my T42). the location of the noise is on the left side of keyboard, like the fans of CPU ,or GPU?daeojkim wrote:My T42 is completely quiet. now my meter reads: CPU 44degree celsius,CPU frequency 600MHz.
what wrong with my T42? do I have to call IBM tech support?

can you be more specific about the noise?
What kind of noise is it? is it just the fan noise? or is it some other kind of noise?
When my fan is blowing hard it just sounds like the noise of the air exiting the vent. it does not sound any mechanical nature.

yes, not mechanical, but the air blowed out the ventilation. when powered on, the fan of CPU will blow strongly for about a second, after then the air comes through the ventilation holes are clearly heard, that is what i stand for the noise.daeojkim wrote:can you be more specific about the noise?

ps.someone mentioned that the constant air flow by the "fan" is the GPU's , not CPU's. do you have any idea?

I think these are the possible senarios.
1. The fan speed is higher than normal at low demand usage and / or there is something wrong with the fan and / or temperature sensor.
2. Your ear may be too sensitive and /or you are in a place where there is complete quietness. Or you are sticking your ear right next to the vent.
3. Are 15" T42s noisier than 14"?? This one I have no idea, mine is 14". May be someone who owns both 14" and 15" may have better idea.

those air blast when boot are normal, less than 1 second, after that that t42 is very quite...i have a t42 so i know what i'm talking about.
The fan may kick in if you do some intensive task...
unless the noise are constant, no need to panic.

1. do you mean the CPU fan should be stopped at low usage? maybe sth wrong with my control circuit or the sensor.daeojkim wrote:I think these are the possible senarios.

2.i do not have a hi-fi ear but i can clearly identify the constant fan noise.
3. i don't think the difference is from 15" vs 14", for my 15"LCD's cover is totally cool(at least cooler than my hand skin)
