i guess people have been successful in installing SSDs on t42 via converters here. i'd like to install this ssd on my trusty t42, is it possible??

Not possible without hardware modification.
Imagine that you put the 2.5" SATA SSD in the slot where your 2.5" PATA drive used to be. The drives are the same size, so there's no much extra space where you could place the adapter. With soldering and wiring the adapter it could be located somewhere else, but that again is hardware modifying.
There's no easy plug'n'play solution for your idea. Sorry.
