Thinkpad T42p - Warranty Extension Link?

#1 Post by zgco » Wed Apr 20, 2005 1:45 pm

Hello, I have a T42p for about a year now - think warranty expires in 5/2007 - is it possible to extend this warranty for another year or two with IBM? Thanks.

If you are registered as the owner IBM and in the US will contact you (many times) to ask you to extend when the warranty gets close to expiration.

Can't find warranty upgrade for t42p

#4 Post by firefan » Fri Apr 22, 2005 12:58 am

Hello,

I have a T42p 2373KTU with standard warranty. I want to upgrade to 3 year on-site warranty but I am unable to find that option on the IBM website. The list of machines in the drop down from this website

http://www-132.ibm.com/content/home/sto ... rades.html

doesn't include T42s. (T41s and T43s are on the list, however). Are T42 warranties not upgradable? Thanks.

[edit] Leon, your link above for personal use machines does not include the T42 either...

There should be another problem:

Extended service contracts are available for sale in all U.S. states EXCEPT: California, Florida, Nevada or Oklahoma. Obligor may be either IBM or Federal Warranty Service Corp., an Assurant Solutions company. To view the Assurant Solutions privacy policy, go to.

I do not why, byt those 4 US states are out of the warranty extension services ... [/b]
Let's go'n'restart :-)

The T42s are not on the drop-down list, bit if you select a T41 or T43, it will take you to a page that will let you complete the purchase. Or, if you call, they will let you make the purchase over the phone. I KNOW that you can buy it for the T42 because I did.

The excluded states are because of outdated/arcane Insurance Law. If you live in one of these states, use a friends/associates address in another state when ordering. Those states are only excluded for the PURCHASE of the contract; once you have it and "move back" to your original address, it is good anywhere.

Anyway, I think the maximum extended warranty offering from IBM is 5 years (it counts from the date of unit purchase --not warranty purchase).

Normally buying extended warranty at the the time of purchase is cheaper than buying it later, but I think it is also good idea to wait and see how often we NEED to use that during the first 3-year standard warranty. IBM Thinkpads's quality have been so good that I rerely send them for repair among many machines that I have been using. My 600E Thinkpad is still running today (but hardly can do anything).

By 3-year, I think it's the time for me to buy a new notebook anyway, which usually ended up to be IBM Thinkpad for me... err sorry... Lenovo Thinkpad for the future.

There are many current Thinkpads that come with only a one year warranty standard, such as the 2378 model T42.

It is strongly suggested that purchasers of these machines upgrade the warranty to at least three years of depot level repair at the time of purchase.

Only costs $132 which makes it a no-brainer IMHO.

I've upgraded from 1 year to 3 years and I am satisfied. 3 years are imho enough.
