UJ-812B DVD RW Issues

#1 Post by bpsss » Wed Apr 20, 2005 5:10 pm

I have problems with a new DVD/RW drive in a T42. It is a UJ-812B. The drives plays ok, but won't engage a disk when drying to record a DVD. I looked at a firmware upgrade on http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... MIGR-57083 and noticed that the only way of doing this is to by copying the utility to a floppy drive, bit of a problem if you don't have an A drive etc.

Any ideas?

Get a USB floppy. I think every Tp owner should have one. You can get one on e-bay for under $20 shipped.

Or make a bootable USB drive.

OK yes, but I was wondering more specifically had anyone had trouble with these drives. They seem to have some issues - looking at some newsgroups. I have been trying a +8 DVD R so I will try some lower speeds.

The unit writes ok to CDs.

I have been reading up on this drive - the UJ-812B, and can see that it is clearly a piece of s***.

Many people having all kindsblem of problems with it.

This one I think is faulty - but many people have issues with only certain types of media etc...

There are a LOT of problems with the drive.

My first one could read/burn CD-Rs, but could not read DVDs or DVD-RWs. The good news is IBM is fast and efficient at shipping out replacements.

A friend of mine also had to get a replacement just last week - his could read DVD-Rs and read/write DVD-RWs, but could not write to DVD-Rs.

I think they're just very fragile in general.

Will the ultrabay 2000 floppy and the cable that connects to the parallel port, work on a T42p?

I know the ultrabay 2000 floppy will not fit into a T42, but can you use the external cable that connects the floppy to the parallel port? Will the T42 recognize the drive?

Glen, don't know the answer there...if you have one, try it. Tha'ts all I can say. You may have to enable floppy drive in BIOS.
Good luck

Does anyone know if there is a difference between UJ-812 and UJ-812B? I have an problem where my T40 will not recognize the 812 EXCEPT the first time the computer is turned on. After you open the tray once and close it the computer no longer sees the driving, even while its spinning. The firmware version I have is K100, and the 812B has an update to K104 but I dont know if I can apply it without ruining the drive. There is nothing on IBM.com about the 812, they only have the 812B. Any ideas?

You need the portable drive bay to use a DVD ultrabay 2000 drive in T4X

Are you sure that you have used - (minus) type of DVD ..
