What is the difference between ultrabay slim and ultrabay 2k

Their dimension are the same.

No, the dimensions are not the same.
Ultrabay Slim is 9.5mm thick. Ultrabay 2K is 12.7mm thick.

Different connector on the back of the drive or device as well

Yes, indeed --the Ultrabay Slim and Ultrabay 2000 adaptors ARE different sizes.

Even IBM's telephone support tends to be clueless about this.

So, when you are asked by IBM telephone support (as I was) to take the second hard drive --located in the Ultrabay 2000 adaptor of the Dock II for example-- and place it in the Ultrabay Slim port of the ThinkPad, you may verify for yourself and IBM telephone support that Ultrabay 2000 is a bigger slot...because it won't fit in the Ultrabay Slim port of your ThinkPad.
