I recently purchased a used 15" t42p laptop on ebay and since it didn't come w/ hard drive, caddy, or cover. I bought a couple of new t42p caddies/covers on ebay also. As far as I can tell, the covers are identical to ones I have on my working 15" t42p units. However, when I try to use them the system won't see the hdd. I know its not a drive issue, because I can see (and boot) the drive when I put it in an ultrabay. Similarly, if I switch covers with one of the working units, the situation reverses and the new system boots and the formerly working system doesn't see the hdd.
Does the cover serve any other purpose beyond getting the hdd pins to line up with the internal connector?
Any suggestions on how to get the cover to work, or where I can buy one *guaranteed* to work?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Re: Hard drive cover issue on t42p
Looks as though you have covers for 14", instead of 15" T4x. If that is the case, the HDD pins won't reach the socket. You will need the covers with the longer "legs" to help push the drive all the way in.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

OR you did not put the drive in correctly: upside down (label to the table), while using a caddy and 4 screws.

Re: Hard drive cover issue on t42p
I found the problem. I apparently managed to bend some of the pins on the drive itself. Perhaps inserting it wrong or something. I straightened them back out and life is good again. I now have all my t42p machines booting.
Thanks for the help.
