T41p Works only with dothan CPU and lowest multiplier

#1 Post by kfirb » Mon Jun 25, 2012 12:12 pm

Hi,

I have an interesting problem:
1. My T41p came with Banias 1.7 GHz CPU. A couple of months ago it started to shut off or freeze.
2. I replaced the fan, but the problem wasn't solved.
3. I replaced the CPU to Banias 1.6 GHz CPU - The same.
4. Tried a Dothan 1.4 GHz - works solid, but on 600 Mhz.
5. Flashed new BIOS, new EC, removed CMOS battery. Nothing.
5. Only running IbmPad's power management program did the trick, but only as long as it is running.

Does anyone experienced the same problem?
Is it the Embedded Controller?

Thanks,
Kfir.

Did you also clean up the old gunk and apply fresh thermal paste between CPU and cooler?
To run at full CPU speed, the laptop needs an AC adapter AND a working battery simultaneously!

Yes I did.
I also tried AC & battery together (By the way, my T60 works on full speed with AC only).
I think that the problem is with the EC or BIOS, not working well with Thermal Monitor 2 - HWInfo may indicate that (TM2 is painted red).
Is there a way to write directly to the registers and fix it?

I would sooner say that your Southbridge chip (big Intel chip under the wifi card) is becoming unstuck/unsoldered.

Hi, I think this is because your CPU stepping level (probably C0) is not recognized by BIOS. You need a dothan chip with Ax or Bx steppings. Otherwise, you'll have to stick with power managment doing the trick for you.

I checked it. The CPU is stepping B1.

Does anyone know how to deal with thermal monitoring and speedstep?

What CPU exactly is it?

It's a Dothan Pentium M 710.
Before it was a Banias Pentium M 1.7 Ghz.

That's a wrong CPU...

You need 735/745/755/765 if you want it to run at proper speed/clock...

Why is it wrong?
And why the computer gets stuck on standard Banias CPU's?

The M710 is correct in the series, a Dothan 1.4 running at an FSB of 400 MT/s.
Strangely enough, all other 400FSB Dothans have an M7x5 model number, hence the confusion.

What might be the case, is that your M 710 CPU is faulty.
That's rare but not unheard of.
Borrow an M735 or M745 if you can, see how that goes.

The T40/T41/T42 machines should be able to run on any Banias or Dothan CPU, as long as the FSB is 400MT/s.
Banias CPUs have 1MB L2-cache and are built on a 130nm die, Dothan CPUs have 2MB L2-cache and are built on a 90nm die.
