The only workarround I know of is changing the processor of the T42 to a T43 processor (it has the PAE instruction as well as the Execute Bit instruction), but since this processor was made to run at a 533Mhz front side bus, putting it on a 400Mhz fsb motherboard will make it run at a lower clock. For instance a 1.73Ghz 533 processor will run at 1.53Ghz on a 400 fsb motherboard. To check what speed you will achieve, you have to go to the intel ARK site, check the Pentium Mobile processor under the mobile products option and multiply the desired 533 processor multiplyer to 100 so you will know on what speed will it run. The fastest 533 processor is the Pentium M 780 (clocked at 2.26 on a 533 fsb) which will run at 1.7Ghz if installed on a T42. It stinks, I know...

No, you can't put a T43 CPU in a 'lower' mobo like T40/1/2
Forget about Windows 8, stick with W7 or XP on such older machines.

Even 7 is an overkill IMO.

Yes you can. I did it myself.

While I agree it's doable, I see no point in doing so...

Have a $50 CPU running at the same speed as a $5 one... :??:

Swapping the board for a T43/p or R52 one makes a lot more sense in my book.

Presuming one would want to go this type of distance just for the ability of running W8 (whoopty-doo) in the first place...

I agree with George, buying a T43 or R52 motherboard would be far more effective...

The only reason I dredge up this Dothan CPU subject again is that the T43 motherboard replacement looks more intimidating than the CPU replacement.
I also have a Windows 8 license already and will have to buy a copy of Windows 7 if I don't do this upgrade.
If the motherboard is changed, I wouldn't have to buy Windows, but would have to buy a CPU as well.

I've got a Banias 1.5GHz in my T42.
Won't I still feel as if I've upgraded the machine after putting the Pentium M 780 in it? And I won't have to worry about the overheating people have mentioned using the correct 2.0/2.1GHz CPU's.

No because it would run at 1.6GHz or thereabouts unless you pinmod it.

Easily addressable with free software...
