T43's CPU maxing out on basic tasks and freezing

#1 Post by lucadelcarlo » Sun Sep 16, 2012 11:47 pm

My heretofore always reliable T43 has been freezing lately, and the CPU overloading on simple tasks. I've tried basic "software mechanic" tools, rebooted a dozen times, defrag, checked for disc errors, but my knowledge, admittedly, is limited on repair fixes. I should note also, that for the past several months, the famously loud fan was running less frequently, and the unit became warmer (I've since bought a cooling pad as at lease some attempt to cope) and that the USB ports seemed unstable. Though no real solution to the freezing was discovered, a gentle tap on the unit, often seems to bump it out of the freeze, which probably is a clear indication of wihat the underlying problem is.

Any recommendations/suggestions? Many thanks!

Sounds like a failing SouthBridge chip to me.

Yes, it sounds like typical unsoldered Southbridge, which is sorted out by infrared reballing and I've done literally hundreds of these on T4x's.

Give me a shout via PM or via my website link - not too expensive either!
