T43p CPU Temps and NHC

#1 Post by Fixed_Rider » Fri Sep 28, 2012 7:11 pm

Hello,
I have read quite a bit today on CPU temps and using NHC to undervolt.

My big question is why doesn't NHC 2.0 report my CPU temps? I have the box checked in Settings specifically to show the CPU Temp.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

What CPU do you have in there?

Are you running ThinkPad Fan Control?

ajkula66,

I have .....
System Manufacturer IBM
System Model 2668H5U
System Type X86-based PC
System SKU Unsupported
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 2.13GHz, 2133 Mhz, 1 Core(s), 1 Logical Processor(s)

I have not used TPFC. The NHC seems to have to ability to display CPU temp yet it is not.

I found NHC via via thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=74304

Thanks

Thanks
You might have to uninstall it and then re-install it.

Quite a few people around here swear by NHC, I was never too impressed by it. YMMV.

That being said, on any T43p TPFC is a must. Seriously.

Well I poked around in it a bit and under monitoring the "Monitor CPU" check box is grayed out. I may have to purchase and register.

I'll research TPFC. but I'll probably not use it until I get the unti back from the Boardroom. I am waiting until next week (payday) to order the replacement T42 fan and then off it goes for the SATA Mod

The best thing you'll ever do for that T43p is exactly that...

I'd certainly, absolutely, highly suggest/recommend using NHC over TFC on T4x/p ThinkPad... since NHC has the very valuable and advantageous ability to undervolt the CPU, which will reduce the power-dissipation (and hence cause the T43p to run less hot, and in effect will result in that the fan will run at lower speeed) without sacrificing any loss of performance (I've said this again and again...). TFC, on the other hand, completely lack the ability to reduce power consumption. Also, there´s no need to register for NHC; just get the old ver. 2 Pre-Release-06 and follow the advices in the thread NHC 2 is out! - see e.g. this post and the links posted to therein. If you have disabled the CPU temp. control in the APCI interface, I guess it won't be shown, but please take a look at the links mentioned above.

You'll find a very fine guide by forum-member visionviper to setting up NHC through the links pointed to in the thread Undervolting. The next thing I'm going to learn about

Bottom line, certainly: Get NHC for your T43p, and use a bit of time to set it up - I'm convinced you will find the results worth the effort.

PS: An interesting, new alternative-to-NHC tool has recently been developed by a very clever forum-member, IbmPad; see the thread Another little prog for power management - I suggest you consider this as well!

Johan,

I am using the NHC 2.0 pre-release and it is most definitely not showing my CPU temp. Is there something I am missing or could I have a sensor that is bad or unplugged within the unit?

I should note that I am running Win 8 RP 32bit and had to use the Vista video driver to get good playback of videos using VLC.

EDIT: GRRRR....can't get the *^%#(*&^$( pic to show.

Thank you

I'd venture a guess that the problem is within the OS that you're using.

Very briefly have I used W8 on a T43, was underwhelmed and wiped it, haven't tried NHC there, but it most definitely should show you the CPU temps...that's what it does in pretty much any Windows OS that I've tried it on...

Thanks ajkula66,

I have to box this up to send out for the SATA Mod so I'll try NHC on my x61 which typically has Win 8 RP but right now I have my dual boot drive with XP Pro and Ubuntu and I'll see what XP has to offer up.

What about CIA V7 processors? it's doesn't show CPU temps and battery voltage. No settings for them both as well. any ideas why?

I have used IBM_ECW lately on my laptops which was initially written for T4x laptops and allows to control GPU frequencies also. Much smaller footprint than NHC and tpfc and easier to configure.
