ALPS > Chicony Keyboard replacement: should I even bother

#1 Post by The Weissman » Wed Apr 27, 2005 8:51 am

I currently have an Alps keyboard in my T42. Following on my call yesterday, in which I tried to get an NMB (Thai), IBM sent me a Chicony (Chinese). Should I even bother opening up my ThinkPad to put this in?

Edit: I opened the box just to try the feel of the Chicony keyboard. I think I like the Chicony better than the Alps for feel, and it seems a bit quieter. I may just put in the Chicony after all.

If the keyboard IBM sent you is brand new, then you might as well put it in - it's not THAT much of a hassle to change the keyboard.

Personally, I think it would be better to have a brand new CHICONY keyboard than a used NMB keyboard. I just prefer to have things new.

I suppose another option is to save the new keyboard in case your old one were to break somehow.

Except I think IBM usually requires you to return the original product w/their shipping labels. Is this correct?

Do they? I don't know anything about this. From what I've heard some people were allowed to keep their old parts, but it makes sense to send the old one back in order to verify whether the warranty claim was justified.

I was thinking about doing the same as Weissman; my Chinese-made keyboard is somewhat flexy on the right side so a new Thai one would be nice, but if IBM requires me to send the old one back, then I might not do it.

It varies with service agent and circumstance....

When I had them replace my 6-cell battery they did want it back. I put it off for a while and they sent another notice.

I'd imagine they would probly give up after a while tho :P

Actually, they have a very good tracking system. They will bill you, and note it on your system (serial number) record....
