T40 Type code meaning & can't find reference to 2374-2G5
I have a T40 with Type code 2374-2G5. Does anyone know what the Type codes signify? I cannot find anywhere in the hardware reference manuals (editions 1 and 2) that lists my Type. There are plenty of 2374, but none with the 2G5 ending. This has been puzzling me for some time.
Re: T40 Type code meaning & can't find reference to 2374-2G5
It seems to be based on 2373-4AG:
Based 2373-4AG: P M 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, Open bay, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ether, 802.11a/b/g , Sec Chip, UltraNav, 6c Batt, WinXP Home
You'll find that information by going to http://support.lenovo.com scroll down a bit and look to your right, where you find a text box called "Quick path".
Edit: Didn't notice that you are new to the forum. Welcome to the best source of Thinkpad information you'll find (and the most friendly and helpful forum I've ever come across).

Re: T40 Type code meaning & can't find reference to 2374-2G5
Welcome to the forum!
Lenovo's website shows the following specs for your ThinkPad:
ThinkPad T40 (2374-2G5)
Based 2373-4AG: P M 1.5GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, Open bay, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ether, 802.11a/b/g , Sec Chip, UltraNav, 6c Batt, WinXP Home
This sounds like a non-U.S. market machine (judging by the "g" being the last letter in the full model number of the "base" unit) hence it's not in the books...
What codes signify is really not known to general public. The first four numbers (2373/4/8/8 etc) had a lot to do with warranty entitlements when these were new, but are applicable to all T40/p, T41/p and T42/p models...
Confusing? You bet.
Ooops...Orclas beat me to it...

Re: T40 Type code meaning & can't find reference to 2374-2G5
Thanks for the info. Yes, it's a British model, but I never imagined that the full type number would be excluded from the hardware reference manual, because the manual lists a great many permutations of 2374- and I couldn't understand why mine is not there.
It's hugely confusing!
I thought the type code identified in detail the HARDWARE ONLY. But you are saying that is not the case.
This issue came about because the motherboard is being replaced by a ThinkPad guru and I was just checking out the part numbers in the manual.
Thanks for the help.

I've worked on thousands of T4x machines and have yet to figure out the relationship between hardware and the codes...I'm certain that there is one but it's likely unknown to anyone outside IBM/Lenovo...
You have the second weakest motherboard of all the T4x ones, so don't be too worried about swapping it...nothing to lose there...

Re: T40 Type code meaning & can't find reference to 2374-2G5
The board that was in it was 91P7998 but is being replaced by 91P7716. I can't see the 91P7998 at all in the hardware ref. manual, but the 91P7716 is listed. But I don't know the difference. Please tell me that the 91P7716 is not the worst board of all!!!

Nope, that's pretty much the same board as the original one from what I can see.

Glasgow (UK). I gave it when I joined and just checked my profile and it's there. Don't know why it's not showing on the posts.

I've dealt with Nick (poshgeordie) on several occasions and have only the highest reccomedations.
