Needed drivers/apps for a clean install on T42p
Needed drivers/apps for a clean install on T42p
Hallo,
sorry if this topic has been discussed but I need some help.
I have a T42p (2373-HTG) 1.8 Ghz, 1.5 GB RAM, 60 Gb @7200, ATI FireGL, DVD multiburner. I've also an original copy of Win XP, buyed separately.
I would like to install a clean copy of Win XP on my T42p, deleting hidden partition, and then install the needed driver/apps to use my tp.
I searched the IBM site and when I arrived to the driver download I found a long list of software very confusing for me.
What are the NEEDED drivers/apps for my tp?
Is it possible to use R&R without the hidden partition? How?
Thanks a lot, C.

Re: Needed drivers/apps for a clean install on T42p
I guess this is what you need.
Drivers you need:
- ACPI Power Management
- Ethernet
- Wireless
- Video
- Audio
- Modem

Well, not exactly.
I have *already* a working copy of Win XP.
My problem is to select the right drivers/apps from ibm.com: when you list the software for my model you have almost 80 entries, but more are not useful in my opinion.
Scenario: I release the hidden partition from Bios, I fdisk, format and install Win XP SP2 from my own original copy, then I should connect to the internet (or use a CD i downloaded) and select the NEEDED software from ibm.com.
At the and I have a new installed copy WITHOUT hidden partition but with all the software from Access IBM.
Where to start? Thanks again, C.

Hi Cecilia!
My turn to help you
I used this software to reinstall automatically all drivers on my computer, it's very easy and really great!

Good Luck!

So you think that after that I've installed a clean XP version (no brand) I only need to run the SOFTWARE installer and everything will work?
I am quite happy, for this.
The software installer I have (btw, is there the italian version?) don't let me to choose the internet as the source for the drivers.
Maybe the version you told me does?
Thanks again, Cec

Cecilia,
Older versions of the Software Installer only looked in the drivers directory. The new version will first check the internet and download needed drivers, putting them in the drivers directory, and then install them for you.
Before you wipe your disk:
1. Make a R&R rescue disk - this will allow you to reboot into the R&R environment from CD after you delete the R&R partition.
2. Make recovery disks - These will allow you to restore the factory install complete with hidden partition if you ever want to.
3. Backup C:\i386 and C:\ibmtools to CD - i386 has all the Windows files, ibmtools has all the ibm applications. There are a few preloaded applications (WinDVD, not sure what else) that are not available for download - only pre-installed. If you want to use them you will need to install them from the CD.
4. Download and run the new software installer, and make sure your machine type and model are detected correctly. Some people have had problems with it not identifying their machine correctly.
The fresh install of XP should work right out of the box, but installing the IBM drivers using the Software Installer is still a good idea. Things like active protection will only work if the IBM drivers are loaded.
I'm not sure if the software installer will install Access IBM or if you need to install it from the ibmtools CD. Try the installer first.
You CAN use R&R without the hidden partition, but with limitations. You will need to download and install it, of course - I think the Soiftware Installer will grab it but if not get it from the IBM site. You will not be able to use the F11 prompt or Access IBM button to boot to the rescue environment. If your system ever becomes unbootable put the R&R rescue CD (NOT the recovery CDs) in the CD drive and boot. It will boot into the rescue environment where you will be able to make repairs or select a backup to restore. I would definitely test the rescue disk by booting to it before I wiped the hidden partition.
Good luck, and of course be sure you have a good backup of any important data before you start.

Cecilia76,
1. You wrote you "would like to install a clean copy of Win XP..." - my first link. You didn't say that you've already installed it.
2. You asked for the NEEDED drivers/aps. - My 2nd paragarph.
Software installer doesn't help you choosing the needed drivers. It just gives a list with all the available drivers/aps for your TP.
Regards,
G-Man

I just downloaded the Software installer but when I try to use it tells me that the computer is not connected to the internet. Well, actually it is I am writing to the forum!
