Hello from Canton, OH!

#1 Post by scodal » Sun Nov 04, 2012 8:13 am

Well, I've decided I should probably be a member of this forum because I always introduce my fellow geeks I meet in the real world as 'Thinkpads Biggest Fan.' Turns out I'm not the only one. I've been on this forum many times.

So, let's get to the good stuff that I know you're probably wondering. My first thinkpad was a 166mhz thinkpad in the 90's. I loved it and it would still probably be running today except I got a pop up one day and for some reason my teenage testosterone decided I should punch the screen. I about cried. Then I got a Thinkpad R31 and used it for yeeeeears til well I don't really remember what happened to it. It always had something slightly wrong with it, I always called it a pressure point. It would lock up til you put pressure in a certain area. It was weird but I didn't even care I was so fast and efficient on it.

These days I'm rocking 3x T43 Thinkpads. After lots of research I determined it would be the perfect fit for me. I bought one, then I started day dreaming about how nice it would be to have more. Now I have 1 (15 inch) at home (with external widescreen attached for dual screen), 1 at work (also with 15 inch and external widescreen attached for dual screen), and a 14.1 in my laptop bag so I'm always ready for Thinkpad action anywhere. All 3 have 1.5 gb of ram, SXGA screens that run 1400x1050 (which I absolutely love), and 128 mb ATI onboard graphics. The only real difference between the 3 is that 1 of them is 2.0 ghz and the other 2 are 1.8 ghz (although I can't personally tell any difference when using them) and 2 have 40gb hard drives and one has an 80gb hard drive.

Despite being single core processors, kind of low on ram these days, and small hard drives, they still out perform so many computers I use that are supposed to be top of the line! I don't really understand these magical devices. They NEVER slow down or cause me grief. I can just keep throwing stuff at them and they just go go go go. I save a lot of stuff over the network to a 1tb hard drive so I don't care about my local hard drive space that much. 40gb is plenty of room to get all my preferred programs installed and still have about 10 or 20gb for whatever else and flash drives are cheap. I have lots.

Okay, I'm done with my rant now. Look forward to meeting other Thinkpad nuts like me during my time here!

Welcome aboard, mate! We're glad to have you here. You'll see, you're by no means the only T43 fan around here. If you're not careful, you may end up with an even larger collection of ThinkPads...that's what happened to me anyway.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Welcome to the forum!!!

Out of my collection I still prefer the look and feel of my daughters T43p (Sata Mod by RBS). I have more money wrapped up into that unit than my two x61's and my T61 (just sold) combined and it is WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

FYI I have been running a Win8 Pro on both the T43p and an x61s (single core 2.16 against dual core 1.6, both with 2gb ram) and the feel of it is that they perform the same using then for basic consumption. Web browsing, email, YouTube, Pandora running in the background.

I'd love to grab another T43 but my wife would throw a fit.

Haha Neil I was already surfing craigslist and ebay for what good Thinkpad deals are goin on this morning... Here's hoping my collection grows. Not that it needs to. But I always welcome more thinkpads my way. I was actually looking at the Thinkpad tablets, I didn't even know they were working on those. Looks pretty slick. Saw some Android, saw some Win 8.

Fixed_Rider, I was JUST reading about that Sata Mod. I really want to do that! I was also googling the t60 and t61 this morning to see if maybe I should try one out, but decided eh not yet. I think the only real upgrade on those is that they use SATA and apparently I can already do that with a little tweaking. I can't believe u got win 8 on a t43. I haven't got myself a copy of win 8 yet. I'm all about win xp on these t43's. I'm single at the moment so the upside is that I can buy as many nerdy things as I want and no one can tell me no... but I feel like every time I buy another device, my chances of finding a mate go down another notch LOL

scodal,

IMO I'd spend money on the SATA mod ILO getting another unit. The difference really is night and day. RBS is much closer to you than me in Denver. The shipping bill sucked but that is it.
I was shocked to see a 7200rpm drive in the T43p before I shipped it out I was expecting a 4200 and there was still a big difference in performance. :mrgreen:
