What is "normal" CPU operating temp range? (T42)
What is "normal" CPU operating temp range? (T42)
I recently replaced the system board on my wife's T42. When I installed the original CPU and fan, I carefully cleaned the heat sink and processor top with isopropyl alcohol before applying a very thin layer of Arctic Silver 5, as per instructions. After the repair, I downloaded a hardware monitor program. It reports CPU1 temperature is around 50C when idle and up to 53C-55C during video playback. CPU2 is lower. Can't recall, but I believe around 43C. The air coming from the side vent is definitely warm.
Unfortunately, I never monitored my CPU temperature before so I don't know what's normal. The AS5 instructions indicate it may run "several degrees" warmer during the 'break in' period, which could last up to 200 hours. But I would feel better if I knew if the range I'm seeing is to be expected, or if it indicates a problem.

If it's a Dothan the max. Core Temperature is 100°C, so you're well within safe operating temps.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Yes it's a Dothan 735 (1.7). Thanks for that.

Beautiful temps - nothing to worry about there.

Re: What is "normal" CPU operating temp range? (T42)
Thanks again. My only frame of reference is my desktop, which has an Athlon 64x2 4200. It idles around 30C and hits maybe 45C watching videos. But the case is well ventilated and I have a Hyper 6+ cooler on the CPU. Also, that CPU has a max of 71C I think. I just assumed a laptop CPU would run cooler since it uses so little power compared to my desktop (27W vs. 89W rated).
