Hard drive - Active Protection seems to stall video

#1 Post by michaelj » Sat Apr 30, 2005 11:22 pm

I installed a 60GB 7200 HD a few months back and have been very happy other than 2 things:

The drive seems to be oversensitive to movement when I play DVD video files from the hard drive.

If I have my T42 on my lap and move only slightly, the video freezes for a couple of secs, then recovers and continues to play. I plan to watch movies on the plane and I am worried that any movement will lock up the video.

I assume that this may be the Active Protection coming into play. I cant think of any way to avoid this other than disabling AP-which I haven't yet tried. Does anyone else have this problem?

Also, after noticing that my HD was spining down rather quickly and creating a couple of seconds delay response time from the laptop before spinning up (due to power saving, I assumed) I posted on the forum and was advised to run the Hitachi Feature Tool. I used the tool to maximize performace over power-saving in the hope this would reduce the spin down & up. I'm not sure it did make that much of a difference.

I am now wondering of there is an issue with my hard drive that affects both video playng and causes this annoying spin down/spin up delay as I dont remember having this problem with my 5400 HD.

If anyone else has come across this and has found a solution, I'd be interested to hear.

never heard this complaint before..

you CAN adjust the active protection sensitivity..

and put up an active protection system status window..
with realtime reporting..

are you playing movies from the HDD..??

I have the same problem too.. I would really like to not have the video get messed up... but I would like to keep AP on at the same time!

To answer Bill's question- yes, I'm playing movies from the hard drive.
My AP sensitivity was on high- I've moved it to medium.

The drive spinning up is the other issue. Any one with a solution to that will make me very happy!

This is for your own good. If you don't like the sensitivity, adjust it to medium or low. Make sure you allow "ignore small vibration or bumps.." in the settings.

I have had flights that are bumpy enough that I can't get smooth HD video even on medium.

I take that as a sign that I should probably not be using my hard drive. :(
