T30. Warranty Questions? Help. Please.

#1 Post by Gottaknow » Sun May 01, 2005 8:22 pm

I'm lookin' to buy a T30 off of Ebay. A couple of them I'm lookin' at say they still have time on the warranty. Are these warranties transferable? Will I need to old owner to do it, or does the warrenty automatically go with the machine? One of the machines has a squeeky trackpad button. It is under warranty until next January. Would IBM fix this under warranty? What would that involve? Who would I need to send the machine to and how long does something like that usually take? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gottaknow, the answer may depend on what country you are in. Adding this information to your profile will help greatly.

Generally, the warranty is tied to the machine, not the person who bought it. Therefore, the warranty is completely transferrable.

A squeaky trackpad button is probably covered under the warranty, although this might require you to send in the machine for service (kind of a pain if you need to use the machine). IBM sends out a box with DHL/Airborne. DHL will take your machine to the depot and send it back to you. Generally it has taken me2 business days from the date of mailing to the depot to get the machine back, assuming the parts are not on back order.

Gottaknow,

In the US, CA, the EU and most other countries an IBM warranty stays with the machine, not with the original purchaser.

The status of a warranty can be checked at any time by checking it here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... yle=lenovo

I replaced the touchpad on my T30. It's actually part of the entire keyboard bezel, and requires removing about 20 screws and takes an hour, but it's something you certainly could do on your own as well. I just called IBM Support and told them it wasn't working and that I'm comfortable replacing myself rather than sending it in. They were happy to send me a new part and screw kit.
