python.exe at 100% after start with default config ?!

#1 Post by beerak » Tue May 03, 2005 7:00 am

Hi,

today I turn on my machine and after start a process python.exe came to 99% CPU usage. I did not install python but it resides under the IBMTOOLS. Is it normal ? I have never seen this problem before. How can I turn off python.exe interpreter after start up ?

Thanks.
Let's go'n'restart :-)

Same problem. Been doing that for a while, off and on.

Also does it when waking from standby.

I just kill python.

It would be nice to know what is using this.

I sorta suspect a buch of the ibm stuff uses the python interpreter. Not a bad idea, but it would nice if they set it up so the process names were meaningful.

Had this happen to me once ever week and, Well, I'm not a big fan of RR and a lot of the IBM tools so i just uninstall anything that doesnt interfere with core function.

IBM Preload OEM ships with a python 2.3 distribution that is quite old and i didnt want it interfering with my work so i just uninstalled that and installed the latest 2.4.x

My advice is to download the Microsoft Process Explorer App the next time it happens and trace the python instance back to the parent application and post here.

I have a T4x with everything except R&R installed and running and there is no evidence of python on my machine: no service, no process and no file. So it may be restricted to R&R. ... JD Hurst

If I am not mistaken, Python is related to egatherer. Egatherer is what IBM uses to collect information from your machine for automated solutions. I only have the original RnR on my T42. I may have downloaded Automated Solutions since I last used the Product Recovery Disc set. I have Python in at least (2) places: C:\IBMTOOLS\eGatherer & C:\IBMTOOLS\Python22.

From the readme.txt file in the Python22 directory:
What is Python anyway?
----------------------

Python is an interpreted object-oriented programming language suitable
(amongst other uses) for distributed application development,
scripting, numeric computing and system testing. Python is often
compared to Tcl, Perl, Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic or Scheme. To
find out more about what Python can do for you, point your browser to
http://www.python.org/.

So is python new or old? I do not have it in IBM Tools, but I do have an IbmEgath.XML in the root folder. It is dated in 2005. I used to get Egather stuff in my User\...\temp folder, but I kept deleting it. Now I use Disk Cleanup and it seems it no longer returns. So however I did it (not sure), it is entirely gone from my system. I am still using SI, but I won't use SU and I have never installed R&R. ... JD Hurst

The date of the Python files is 3/19/2004. The date of the Python22 and egatherer directories is 4/12/2006 @7:10PM. The date of my IBMTools directory is 4/12/2006 @5:18PM. This is the same date (4/12/2006) I used the Product Recovery Discs to restore my system. No doubt I immediately went to get the latest drivers and software just after using the discs. Like I said before, I did not update RnR. The date of the latest files (.dat) in the egatherer directory is 12/3/2006. Not sure what other information I can give.

This occurs on my Thinkpad as well. Process explorer shows that it is related to egatherer.

It's quite annoying.

Here is a little more information on eGatherer.
Lenovo wrote:To determine if eGatherer is installed on your machine
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools, then click Internet Options.
3. On the General tab, click Settings.
4. Click View Objects. If IBM Access Support is displayed in the dialogue, then IBM eGatherer is installed.
Looking at the above, you should be able to remove eGatherer from Internet Explorer.
Lenovo wrote:At least one of the versions of the previously mentioned software was included in the standard preload:
* ThinkPad T23, T30, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, R30, R31, R32, R40, R40e, R50, R50p, X22, X23, X24, X30, X40, G40, S31, and TransNote
<snip>
* Or any system which ran an Automated Solution prior to April 1, 2004
The above is referring to older versions of eGatherer being installed. I believe it is likely newer versions of eGatherer are installed on newer ThinkPads than in the above list, or on systems that have run Automated Solutions from the web.
Lenovo wrote:A potential security vulnerability in the Access IBM, Access Support, and IBM Automated Solutions Active X controls was recently identified. IBM has taken actions to provide fixes for systems already shipped and has updated IBM manufacturing to eliminate this problem in new system production.

You should apply the fix if your system has Access IBM versions 3.0 or 3.5, if your system has any version of Access Support, if you ran any Automated Solutions from ibm.com prior to April 1, 2004, or if you accessed any IBM web functions using the IBM eGatherer active X control prior to April 1, 2004.
Running Automated Solutions from IBM's or Lenovo's website apparently installs eGatherer.
