T41 Fell, Smashed, Trying to Fix

#1 Post by ParatoOptimal » Tue Feb 05, 2013 3:46 am

I put together a T41 for someone who needed a computer but couldn't afford one.
Well, of course they tripped over the power cord and the laptop smashed to the floor.

They've returned it to me to try to resussitate. I'm just starting to take give it a preliminary once over.
The front, bottom corner where the PCMCIA Card slot is, is where contact was made with the floor.

There's smashed and missing plastic.
The slot door isn't secured properly. It can rest in place properly but it can be also be off-set.
I found a brass threaded barrel I suppose is supposed to be embedded in plastic to accept a screw but haven't located where it came from.
The right, front of the keyboard near the palmrest is pushed towards the screen and raised up.

It didn't power up at first but after removing the keyboard, palmrest, battery and RAM, I leaned the RAM, reconnected the keyboard and it booted-up.
I got into win7. I was reading a readme file that I had written for the recipient/owner and the computer shut down.
I moved the power adapter cable around where it connects to the laptop. It seems to have some play in it instead of staying snug and tight in-place.
I rebooted and all seems to be well. There is a ton of dust kitties in it. The PCMCIA CARD slot was full of dust kitties even though it has a dust cover/door.
I will give it a good cleaning.

My question is, what is this ...
After removing the palmrest, at the left front corner near the PCMCIA CARD bay, there's a shiny, rectangular piece of plastic with two sort of orbs/balls protruding from it.
It sort of resembles a small, two bump lego block but instead of pegs it has these balls. The hardware maintenance manual depicts it on the motherboard but doesn't say what it is.

Well, this unknown piece has broken off. The underside reveals that it was connected to 7 pins, tongues, terminals, whatever on the motherboard.
The "pins" have sheared off the motherboard.
I'm guessing it's just a terminator of some sort. The plastic covered these pins??? The pins were unused by IBM??? Maybe they were there for diagnostics or for add-ons.
What is it.
Should I just clean the motherboard contacts and make sure they aren't touching each other?

I'm hoping nothing else is rolling around lose. I'm hoping that brass, threaded barrel is of no consequence. I'm hoping there's no damage where the power connector connects to the mother board and where it connects to the power adapter cable so the cable will stay snug enough.

Any help, thoughts, insights are greatly appreciated.

What fell off there is the infrared 'transmitter light' for lack of a better word.
You can leave it off, nobody uses it nowadays.
Just make sure the contacts on the left-front top of the mobo where it sheared off don't touch one another.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
