T43 Frankenpad? What to go for?

#1 Post by Cola » Wed Feb 27, 2013 4:28 pm

Hi all!

I just purchased a T43p 15'' with the UXGA IPS display. The motherboard is defective, which is way I got it very cheap.

Simple question now, what replacement motherboard should I buy for it and put in it? And will a 14'' T4X motherboard work in it as well? I have got all components of the original one, so no problems with LCD cable, inverter or anything like that.
On the original motherboard, the SB is fried.

Thanks!
Regards, Frederik.

Check out this list on my website: www.theboardroom.info/ibm_list.htm
Every board there will fit!
But only the group "T43 and T43p"and the "R52" group uses the same CPU and RAM types as what you have now.
And to drive that UXGA screen your choice is further limited to boards with ATI graphics.

14.1" and 15" machines use the same motherboards (15" have an extra interposer-board to make up for the difference in size).

First of all, thanks for your reply! Appreciate it.

So let me get this straight.. I CAN use all the FRU's you have listed, but for the UXGA display to work, it has got to be an ATI mbo? Also, is it limited to e.g. the X600/V3200M, or would it work on the old Radeon 7500's as well?

Would there be a particular motherboard FRU I should go for, and why? I'm not looking to buy directly from your website, as it's way to expensive to get it shipped over here.
I'm buying from either ebay.de or ebay.co.uk. Whatever is cheapest has got my interest.

Final question:
So I WILL be able to, let's say, swap my 14.1'' T43p 2668-PEG's motherboard straight into the 15'' one with no trouble and everything working?

I repeat: Every board there will fit!
And: Every ATI board can drive UXGA screens.
But T43/R52 use different CPU and RAM from the T40/T41/T42/R50/R51.
So if you want to reuse the CPU and RAM you need to select (any) T43/R52 board with ATI.

If that 15" machine includes the interposer board, yes.
You can also swap HD, CD, wifi and modem but not the keyboard.

Sounds good. Thanks for clarifying!
I appreciate it.

Okay. As I was looking around for motherboards again today, I was thinking this: Which one is the best? Obviously T43p or T43 has got the advantage of the fastest DDR2 ram support, but what about stability? There's loads of 2373's dying out, so I'm not gonna want one of those. But the question: Which board is the most stable? It has to have got an ATI chip to power my UXGA display. That's the only requirement really.

Thanks

I'd go with a T43/p board since you already have the necessary parts and they are likely somewhat safer than the previous ones.

Would this completely preclude something such as a P-M 755 in a T43p board (instead of a 760), or would it just mean degraded performance(courtesy of the lower front-side bus speed)? This is coming from a very similar situation here, just with a GPU-faulted T42p - already have a T43p base(board + essentials) on the way.

It will work, but unless you pin-mod it and overclock it, you're looking at a three-legged dog.

PM760 can be had for a song nowadays, really...sell that PM 755 and get a PM780, better yet...

Ok - I was asking that with both cost and lifespan in mind - which I'm not sure the latter can be done with the heat of a PM780.

I've used nothing but PM780 for years and have yet to see a machine fail...YMMV...
