curser stops working

#1 Post by erp52 » Mon Mar 25, 2013 8:36 am

I have a t43, windows 7. My cursor all of a sudden stops working after about 10 minutes on computer. I press alt. ctrl, & delete to get out of the situation, nothing happens. I have to uplug, and start all over again, and it's fine, till it conks out again. Now, curiously, this only happens when I have the battery in. When I took the battery out, the cursor works fine. Hmm. ??? Ed

When you say your cursor stops working, does this mean with the inbuilt track point only, or with an external mouse aswell?

Are you able to bring up the Ctrl-Alt-Delete menu, or is the system completely frozen?

Looks to me like you have already isolated the faulty component.

With the battery in, both pointer and external mouse cursor freezes. I don't know about the ctrl, atl, & delete menu. Where is it? How do I access it. And again, with the battery out, everything is O.K. And as mentioned in previous post, I guess that was the problem. Speaking of batteries, with all those being sold on e-bay, are there any that should be avoided, or are they all just about the same? Ed

Pressing the ctrl-alt-delete keys simultaneously should bring up a Task Manager window which may allow you to see which task is hanging and allow you to highlight it and then "end" that process. If no window displays when that key-combo is pressed, then your laptop has frozen and doing a hard shutdown like you have done is the only solution.

If everything works fine when the battery is not installed (and charging?), then it would seem like it is a battery problem. But, if the battery is -always- being charged when this occurs, then the power brick may be undersized and it can't power the laptop and charge the battery at the same time .... it could be a cause of the problem even though it powers the laptop properly when not also charging the battery.

If you leave the battery in and the laptop off, does the power brick charge the battery until the charging indicator light on the laptop shuts off? When the battery is fully charged and then the laptop is turned on, does the freeze still occur? Does the battery charge decline from a full charge even though it started as full when the laptop was turned on and the laptop is plugged in? When the battery is removed and therefore not being charged, the laptop will be running cooler .... is your fan working properly?

If you know that your battery is old, or has had lots of cycles, or is a cheap replacement battery from eBay, .... and you have no reason to suspect the power brick, laptop fan, or viruses, then a new battery may be the correct solution ..... but do not buy one from eBay.

If I had to buy a battery for a T4x model, I would get a correctly sized Anker brand from Amazon .... good reviews, warranty, and customer support.

I've seen a LOT of *60/61 series units that freeze with a bad battery, can't recall seeing a T4x doing the same thing, but it does seem that the battery is indeed the culprit.

OP: When you say the cursor stops working, do you mean that the computer freezes completely and does not respond to anything?

Yes, GACrabill, what you described is just about what happened. And Twestero, it freezes completly. So, it sounds like I need a new battery, and that's interesting about not buying on e-bay. It seems they have an awful lot on sale. I saw that Anker on Amazon, the reviews were very good. Seems that's the way I'll go. Thanks again, guys, for all that info. Ed
