#1 Post by GoEatFood » Fri May 06, 2005 6:23 pm

does anyone know the chipset for the IBM 11a/b/g Wireless Mini PCI Adapter? or where I can find it...I searched the IBM website and it didn't tell me anything about the chipset...or maybe I'm just blind.

oops, if a mod I posted this in the wrong area...could a mod move this to the hardware section??

It is a bit hard to find on IBM's website. I found this info from TABOOK at:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitu ... tabook.pdf

There are two IBM abg adapters listed:

IBM 11a/b/g Mini PCI Adapter, Atheros AR5001X+ chipset
http://www.atheros.com/pt/AR5001Bulletins.htm

IBM 11a/b/g Mini PCI Adapter II, Atheros AR5004X chipset

I've been a little confused about the TP's wifi

It comes standard with the Intel 2200BG, which is a mini PCI card

All you need to do to upgrade your wifi is replace that card with one of the atheros/IBM ones, right?

My confusion is from the wireless options under "Customize and Buy" at the lenovo site for thinkpads... it lists all these other things and I'm trying to figure out which of these are necessary. It lists an ibm abg "cardbus", what the heck is that? it's different from that mini PCI card, right?
IBM PC Convertible 5140 (1986)
Intel 80C88 4.77 Mhz, 512K RAM, Dual 720K 3.5" floppy drives, Monochrome LCD

IBM Aptiva (1996)
Intel Pentium I 200 MHz, 16MB RAM, 8x CD-ROM

IBM Thinkpad (2005)

Right. If you thinkpad model support miniPCI. If you buying a new T-Series, all of them support it.

Once you have a miniPCI wifi, you don't need another wifi cardbus. Cardbus is a form of PCMCIA card externally attached to the Thinkpad.
