T43P Linux users: Can you play most (steam) games?

#1 Post by Arturus » Tue Jul 09, 2013 4:05 pm

Hello.

I've been thinking more and more about looking into T43p's. My T43 fails to run games like Half-Life 2 or Portal on Steam, but also the Linux versions of games like Braid and Homeworld, (each gives a different OpenGL error. Braid and Homeworld give specific errors about being unable to find X300 configs.)

So, to reiterate the questions: Can your T43p play such somewhat low - end and somewhat recent games? (With perhaps closed - source drivers.)

Thanks,
Arthur.

I don't play games on my laptops, so I'll skip that part but will tell you that if you can't get X300 configured, V3200 will fail to configure as well.

Linux support - generally speaking - for older ATi GPUs is next to non-existent, which is one of the two main reasons I haven't gone 100% Linux a long time ago.

Good luck.

In your experience, would a T60p not have this problem?

We play Homeworld and Half-Life on our T42 laptop under Windows XP with ATI 9600 graphics, but that graphics card was one of the most popular cards of all time. We do not play from Steam, rather, we play from original CDs with original game keys. I believe the X300 is just a little bit beyond the ATI 9600 in capability, so you should be able to play those games under Windows XP with your laptop. As for Linux support of these 3D games, I'm sorry but I have never tried playing 3D games under Linux.

So, the solution is that I dualboot XP to fix driver issues? Sounds okay to me.

On a T43 I've found Windows 7 32-bit runs TF2 okay, and will run best with low config settings and a few game tweaks relating to texture detail.
