T20 CPU upgrade question

#1 Post by lalsh » Tue May 10, 2005 2:03 pm

I am ready to give my T20 the 'Frankenstein' treatment.

I plan on using a 900Mhz cpu and a fan from a T22.

My question is do I need to use the fan cover from a T22 or can I skip putting the fan cover in my T20?

The reason being is that when I purchased the T22 Fan, it didn't come with the matching fan cover.

Cheers!

I don't have these part handy to look at right now, but I'd lean toward using your existing T20 fan and cover, and in fact once you make the CPU swap you may find that's the only option.

NOOOO

Use the t22 fan, the 20 fan doesn't provide enough cooling

Without the keyboard support, which is what I'm figuring you are calling a 'fan cover' how are you going to use the T22 fan at all? Make 3mm shorter screws? If you have the Keyboard support but not the ESD cover that may not be a big deal or something you could 'engineer around.

700 to 900? yea it's certain that the T20 fan wasn't designed for that. But how often does the T2x CPU run full speed or anything close to it anyways? They idle at what, 183Mhz or something like that. I submit that perhaps if you shell out 6 bucks for a tube of Artic Silver and do the job right you may be OK with the T-20 fan. You've got little to lose; if it locks you'll have a good idea why.

Thanks to all for the advice!

To clarify, I am missing the ESD fan cover and Keyboard support.

Should be receiveing the 900Mhz cpu and the T22 fan assembly in a couple of weeks.

I plan on doing a straight update and replace.

I plan on buying and using the Artic Silver grease.

I will post an update as soon as the T20 runs stable.

Cheers!

I replaced the CPU in my old T20 with a new 900Mhz and later with 1000Mhz one.
No problem. You can use the T20 fan, however, the system gets VERY hot and the fan runs all the time.
Not nice, the keyboard grills as well.

The T22 fan is much heavier and larger. it fits nicely into the T20 chassis, no problems. you just have to take out the small aluminum part of the hinge, which conducts heat to behind the screen (quite useless anyway).

have fun, the 300Mhz are just what you needed all the time.
e.g. WinDVD finally runs smoothly with all audio surround enabled.

You don't need artic silver, simple white silicone paste does the job as well. maybe 2°C hotter, but almost for free.

Artic would be necessary for a Pentium IV or Presshot.

Thanks for the advice beeblebrox!

Installed the 900Mhz cpu and T22 fan.

Using Mobilemeter, the temps reach from 38 to 68 degrees celsius.

Not bad considering I ran the cpu with the stock T20 fan and reached up to 90 degrees celsius and later discovered that the thermal pad got cracked.

Only used 3 of the fan screws and will probably cut the T20 keyboard cru insulator to get a better fit.

Again, thanks to all for the great info!

I think something went wrong at your site.
I have exactly the same system, never get beyond 56°C. (!?)

You need all screws! There is no cutting the board. It fits nicely. Use good thermal paste and... well, my fan assembly has a large spring latch to the keyboard for heat transport.

Actually, the max temp got up to 73 degrees.

I'm using a fru 26p9317 fan. I ligned it up with the old t20 fan and it's the screw that goes nearest the fan that doesn't need a screw. Go figure!

Anyways, I'm comfortable with the range considering that the stock t20 temp started in the 70s.

Thanks again beeblebrox!

Ebay is your friend - but be prepared to pay more than you probably expected. They are holding their value quite well! You may prefer a substantially cheaper 900MHz.

How is your T20 working with the PIII 900 and 26P9317 fan?

I don't have many hours on my T20. I just replaced the main board and it's working great with a Hitachi 60g 7200 RPM HDD plus 512MB of memory but....

The PIII 650 is a little slugish. I can get PIII 850 and 900 CPUs for under $30.00 plus the cost of the fan.

I so confused about this. I want to upgrade my t20 to either a 900 or 1g but I keep seeing different part numbers on them and so with the fan. Anyone help me out here.

Look at my message about T20 & T21 fans in this forum.

The T20, T21 & T22 Thinkpads use Micro-PGA2 package (chip size and pin configuration) Mobile Pentium III CPUs. They came with 650, 700, 750, 800, 850, 900 & 1000MHz CPUs depending on the model. Check out this web site for more information on Pentium III CPUs:

http://cpu-world.com/sspec/Mobile%20Pentium%20III.html

Make sure the chip you purchase is a Micro-PGA2; check the Stepping (sSpec) code at the site listed above.

The 900 & 1000MHz CPUs use 1.7/1.35V of current while the rest use 1.6/1.35V. This may or may not create a problem with your T20 mainboard. If you go with a 900 or 1000MHz CPU, you should get one of the Fan/heatsinks from the later model T22s (08K7268 or 26P9317). See my message or check out this IBM web site:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... odelmatrix

The later model Fan/heatsinks use a "Z" bracket to hold them in place (see IBM parts breakdown on the web site above). Make sure that get one of these brackets.

I'm waiting for a PIII 850MHz and older model T22 fan that I bought on eBay. The 800 & 850 CPUs sell for a lot less money and are 1.6/1.35V that the T20 mainboards were designed to use.

Good luck
Chas.
