What's the secret to getting 720p on Youtube?
What's the secret to getting 720p on Youtube?
From what I have read here, it seems hit or miss on getting good streaming of 720 videos from Youtube using a 4X series. I have a 2373-HVU (42p) upgraded to 1.5 GB RAM. Video driver is the latest from Lenovo's site, 8.133.2.1.1.1, which reads as 6.14.10.6547 in device manager. I'm using Firefox 23 and latest Flash. Tried Chrome as well which seemed just slightly better. 480 plays fine but @ 720 the video doesn't keep up with audio even though it's buffering fast enough. I can play 720 videos I create myself but not once uploaded to Youtube. I even lowered the color depth to 16-bit. Also tried playing with Powerplay settings in IBM_ECW.
What am I missing???

A more powerful CPU, and I don't mean a faster Pentium M, but something along the lines of C2D...topshot wrote: What am I missing???

Your Pentium M 745 1.8GHz might be fast enough for 720p, but only with a standalone video player. The overhead of the web browser and Flash could be too much for the CPU.
Try this: use a browser add-on to download a 720p video on youtube, then install CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) and try playing the video with that.

Re: What's the secret to getting 720p on Youtube?
I can get 720p on my T43 (in linux, but with crappier drivers, so it evens out for the sake of this argument) by either downloading the files and watching them with VLC, or, using a utility such as "Minitube" which works beautifully.
Seriously though, get Minitube, it's a minimalist application that works wonders. No bloatware or anything like that, and a nice clean interface.

Re: What's the secret to getting 720p on Youtube?
That's a bummer. I guess those who said it worked must have precached/downloaded them. I guess I'll stick to 480 for now.
So I need a T60/61 it seems. Looks like 60p is only one with 1600x1200 like I have now (don't want widescreen!). I'd also want to upgrade to Penryn but that means I'd need a 61, right? Or should I look at something other than the beloved T series? I'm not a gamer, just a software developer but also create home videos so the fastest processor would help with that.

Search the T6x forum for FrankenPad threads, (15" T60/T60p shell with T61 motherboard) and be amazed.
Even better: look at this one that I built: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=108270
And I can always build more...

Or a 14" T60 with a 15.4" T61 motherboard, if one wants a smaller screen or cheaper solution.RealBlackStuff wrote:Search the T6x forum for FrankenPad threads, (15" T60/T60p shell with T61 motherboard) and be amazed.
Even better: look at this one that I built: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... =108270
And I can always build more...

And what would that cost?RealBlackStuff wrote:Search the T6x forum for FrankenPad threads, (15" T60/T60p shell with T61 motherboard) and be amazed.

It looks like I could use my IDTech N150U3-L01 1600x1200 if needed on a 15" T60 body so I'd just need to find a decent T60 host for my screen and a T61 mobo.

That screen would need an EDID chip and EDID mod, in order for it to work on a T60.
Price for a Frankie? The sky is the limit!
Anywhere from roughly $500 to $1500, depending on your wishes.

Use the full screen magnifier, at 800x600 or 1024x768, flash runs a LOT better, oh and yes a faster CPU.
