Build time: Which config?

#1 Post by DaKKS » Sat Aug 24, 2013 12:15 pm

So I'm getting a parts machine soon and will upgrade my 15" T42 with a UXGA screen. However I'll then have a spare FireGL T2 board and I've sourced a T43 with good plastics. So which is the best build in your opinions?

1. 14" T43 shell
1400x1050 SXGA
Radeon X300 board
Pentium M 755 pinmodded
2GB DDR2
XX GB HDD
Win7

2. 14" T43 shell
1400x1050 SXGA
FireGL T2 board
Pentium M 755 (stock)
2GB DDR1
XX GB HDD
Win7

3. Or just go with the PM 750 in the X300 board for Windows 8 compatibility. SXGA and 2Gb ram of course.

4. Screw the X300 board and attempt to find a V3200 board. The seller had a shipload (YKWIM) of them for pretty cheap (30 euros) and they're all in pretty good nick. Chose with the one with best plastics this time since that's what I was lacking.

I'm thinking X300 is the better of the two right now. X300 was about the same as a 9600 back in the day, but its gotten better drivers since then. And the T2 is dead on that front.

The Radeon 9600 is actually quite a bit faster then the X300 as it has 128bit memory while the X300 has 64bit memory.

I'd go for a mobo with a V3200 though, you need 128MB of video memory to support flash acceleration.
And video performance is poor on these old video cards when running Vista/7/8, so you need all the performance you can get.
No matter what you'll be stuck with an old poorly optimized driver unless you use WinXP.

The T43's have an expresscard slot, handy if you'd like to have some USB 3.0 ports.

So I've moved the SXGA screen now and ended up with the X300 board. I decided I'd much rather have USB 3 and a pinmodded CPU (735/745/755) than the FireGL T2 board (Which runs unbelievably hot and draws more power than a small town anyway.)

If I can get a hold of a V3200 board I'll swap. But until then, the X300 will do.

Some V3200 boards run hot too, for more details read through this thread, it includes a fix as well:

I recommend undervolting the CPU regardless, you should try IBM_ECW.
