Wireless 11 a/b/g card / Country settings
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out, where I can set the wireless LAN card of my 2373-Q1U TP42p to Europe to get access to the WLAN Access Point sending on channel 12 (USA Settings are limited to channel 1-11). Is this only possible with wireless LAN´cards installed in Europe T42p configurations (are there differences between the USA and the Europe WLAN cards), thus may my USA version of the TP42p be limited to USA channel settings?
Thanks, Sincerely, Carlhermann

IF it's there in your card, it's in the Advances Settings Tab under your Cards Properties. Set Extended Channel Mode to Enabled.
I DID hear that IBM was beginning to sell cards in the US that won't do those channels. Mine does. IF I used them, it would be a great advantage in the US, both performance and security wise, because you would be on channels with little to no competition. I WOULD do this BUT it would be illegal, so I wouldn't even think of it (unless it got st that way by accident).

Hi,
just checked for that entry and.. it's not there. Thus IBM sells cards with and without the capability for the externded channels. Thus it's hardware and not software (driver) issue?
I have to have these extended channels, as I use my T42p in Germany with my hotel I'm staying sometimes offering free WLAN acces (on extended channel). Do I have to get hold on a MiniPCI Card as replacement in Germany?
Thanks, Carlhermann

Yes, it's the firmware of the card. I believe if you call and request it specifically, that IBM will ship you the "International" version.
Please let us know.

Hi,
I just checked with IBM support:
They do not exchage it. They can send me a new 93P4262 card but that would not solve my problem.
After some discussion, the support guy asked internal specialist and the second chioce card, the 93P4264 would be the one I need for haveing the switch between "US" and "Europe".
Next bad news is, that the 93P4264 card is no longer listed at IBM's support part shop. It seems to be replaced by the 39T0083, which is 34,62Euros and 5-12weeks delivery time. (in fact, they have no hint in the system it's compatible at all)
Okay, now I have the alternatives:
* Try to get hold on a 93P6264 card (not from IBM)
* Try to order the 39T0083 to see in 5-12weeks if this is the right one
* Try to use another MiniPCI card as offered on ebay
Still thinking of the right choice...

No, the "older" Thinkpads had it, then IBM "tightened up" their policys.
Your "non-extended channel" card will not work in other countries ONLY if their routers are using the higher extended channels.

Hallo Carlhermann,
maybe you can check your registry settings and see if there is an entry for extendedChanMode. if not, maybe it helps to add the string and set it to 1.
Not sure if the card will react to that.
Would be under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Then search for Atheros.
In my case it is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\0002
There is a stringvalue (german: Zeichenfolge) "extendedChanMode" wich is set to 1.
Maybe it helps.

Actually, Ian, I think your incorrect. I believe that France, like most of Europe, allows the Extended Channels (12,13).
In addition, you are NOT supposed to use Channels 1-9 in France.

no need to be testy... I believe your document is unclear, and perhaps innacurate. Here is a clear chart from Cisco Documentation. (Don't worry, if you're using unregulated channels, I won't turn you in!)
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc ... scgaxa.htm
N.B. (the footnote to the chart):
"Note France is included in the EMEA regulatory domain; however, only channels 10 through 13 can be used in France. Users are responsible for ensuring that the channel set configuration complies with the regulatory standards of France."

Yes, if you have the original IBM a/b/g card it is likely that you can. The Extended Channels are illegal to use because the FCC has not "Approved" them for use in the US. Many manufacturers who sell devices worldwide leave it up to the end user to correctly specify their region in order to see which channels to enable. However, in later versions, IBM decided to take it a step further, and only enable US Channels in cards sold in the US.

Leon,
So the IBM atheros a/b/g II 5004 is the newer one with 1-11 only right?
The original you mention is the type I a/b/g 5001x? They are exactly the same card with some modified firmware?
If true, it explains why the newer card type II is cheaper...I think someday we can just hack the type II to enable it.

Hi.
meanwhile I tried to get these extended channels to be available in my T42p by installing a ATHEROS 802.11a/b/g MINI-PCI WIRELESS Card (CM-9) instead of the original IBM card. Well, this turned out to be a nice but unsuccessful try as the T42p does not boot with this card. On startup I get an error 1802, Unauthorized network card is plugged in. Shut off and remove card...
Do I have no other change than to get the original card as of IBM (while I already got informed the original 93P4264 card is no longer available...
Any help would be great,
Carlhermann

there is a no1802.com hack ...try google it..i never used it so i can't comment.
the idea is the hack is used to bypass bios check for non-oem card....i.e ibm put a check to make sure you use wifi card from ibm, not from non certified brand..
this is a FCC regulation...
i'm guessing here..

Hi!
Sorry, my bad english!
RegDomain & Country Utility for Atheros Adapters Version 1.00
http://www.tamos.com/products/commwifi/faq.php
"Q. Some of the channels in the scanner options window are grayed out. Is this normal? What if want to monitor these channels?
A. Depending on your country, your wireless adapter may not support all the channels shown in that window. The channels that are available for use in a particular country differ according to the regulations of that country. In the United States, for example, FCC regulations only allow channels 1 to 11 to be used in the 802.11b/g band. The firmware of the wireless adapters being sold in the US is typically configured to disallow channels 12 and 13. This is not always convenient, as you may need to travel to other parts of the world and be able to monitor locally available channels with CommView for WiFi. You may want to purchase an adapter locally, but you can also use a utility that allows you to change the regulatory domain and country code for some adapters. Before downloading and using this utility, please note:
Overwriting regulatory domain and country settings may permanently damage the device. Proceed at your own risk.
Changing regulatory domain and country settings may not be legal in your country. Consult your company's legal department.
No technical support is available for this utility.
This utility works ONLY with 802.11 b/g and 802.11 a/b/g adapters based on the Atheros chipsets.

Any working solution to enable 13 Channels in 73P4301
Hello
Has anyone yet find a way to use
11 A/B/G Wireless Lan MINI PCI Adapter II 73P4301 (93P4262) for 13 European channels or is the only solution to buy three times more expensive 73P4302 (93P4262) unvailable at US?
Thank You
