Some questions about SATA Ultrabay on T43

#1 Post by nanodario » Sat Sep 21, 2013 7:42 am

Hello everyone,
I have a T43 1871-CTO and I was thinking to buy an Ultrabay slim SATA caddy (this) and this hard disk.

These are the questions:
- Is the HDD compatible with the SATA caddy?
- Is there any capacity limit for the HDD in my T43?
- Will APS stop even the 2nd HDD?
- Will the HDD led indicator blink if there is some activity on 2nd HDD?
- Can I boot from 2nd HDD?

Thank you for any answer :)
Sorry for my English...

Yep that will work just fine. I have a T42 with a SATA SSD in the Ultrabay via a caddy. The SSD is my boot drive running Linux Mint Debian Edition XFCE. Before that it was Windows 7. Switching from Win 7 to LMDE was the best thing I did on this machine. In the main HDD bay, I have a 60 GB PATA HDD (slow) that is used for data. The SSD is nothing fancy, just a 32 GB SLC Samsung drive that I picked up new old stock for $20.

You can use SATA drives up to 2 TB in the Ultrabay. Anything bigger than that do not play nice with non-UEFI BIOS.

APS will work, the HDD led will blink and you can boot from any device that you set in BIOS.

As small hint about using bootable SATA drives in the UltraBay (and avoiding the boot delay); see the sticky GUIDE: Make your T4x *FAST* by replacing the HDD with a SSD! and notice especially this:
In this post the following very interesting information is shared by TioFrancotirador:
Johan wrote:Question: Can this approx. 30 sec. boot-delay be completely avoided/circumvented if a (non-bootable) PATA HDD or SSD, or a "PATA SD card"? (any links to the latter??), is mounted in the main HDD drive bay?
TioFrancotirador wrote:Yes. I do not have 30s delay in boot. I have SSD in UltraBay with Win 7 as main boot. In main IDE drive, where previously I had regular PATA HDD drive, now I have small PATA SD Card reader with an old 1GB card inserted into it. Works great.

I want to keep the 1st PATA HDD in the main slot so I should not have the boot delay, shouldn't I?
