T43p UXGA HV150UX1

#1 Post by Medessec » Tue Oct 15, 2013 12:51 am

Hello. I purchased this T43p 2668-Q1U off ebay a week ago, and I noticed when I powered on the machine, the screen displays the Thinkpad logo for a split second, then it black-screens and stays off. I thought it was an issue with the BIOS or the mainboard, and considering the condition of the machine(the outside was worn through even on the bottom, there were cracks and muck everywhere, the inside was caked, dried up dust everywhere) I figured it was a fair conclusion. So I left it alone for awhile.

I recently just fetched it out to swap the UXGA screen into a T60p SXGA+ that I have, hoping it would work. However, the same exact problem occurred with the T60p, where the machine powers on for a second then blackscreens, appearing to still run. For the second that the screen works, both the T43p and the T60p operate the screen perfectly fine and there appear to be no flaws with the screen(quite bright, no lines, dead pixels, etc.)

The screen is a 15" UXGA Boe-Hydis HV150UX1, and the cable fits perfectly with both the T43p and the T60p.

Anyone know what the problem might be?
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

I can't help much I'm afraid, but I thought T6xy models need an EDID chip in the panel to properly work (for resolutions higher than XGA)

Broken CCFL.
As soon as it switches on, it also starts heating up.
After 1-2 seconds it heats up enough already to open the crack in the tube where it's broken.
Replace the CCFL or get another LCD.

Ah geez. I guess I can try replacing the CCFL... I have plenty of crappy 15" screens around here. But the only other time I've tried replacing a CCFL, I made a total mess of it, and the screen ended up with lines on the edge and it wouldn't fit in the bezel anymore.

Welp, I've got a decision to make. Thanks for the solid diagnosis, RBS.
but I though T6xy models need an EDID chip in the panel to properly work (for resolutions higher than XGA)
Not sure, I've been hearing that a lot too when I go after T43 to T60 15" screen swaps. But all three of my screen swaps have gone without any hiccups, it's just plug and go. I think the EDID in the models I bought(2007-YS3) have data for certain UXGA screens already, despite being 15" SXGA+ IPS T60p machines.

One word of advice: DON'T

RBS will tell you himself that these Hydis panels are a sheer hell to work on...just bury it with honours and move on.
