okay, the last stretch in T42p/T43p decision...

#1 Post by pointfielder » Thu May 12, 2005 5:03 pm

Hi guys,

Help me choose between:

T42p 2373-HVU 1.8GHz 1GB Ram 15inch UXGA Combo Drive IBM Atheros 5001X+ ABG
128MB ATI T2 = (EPP Price: $1988+TX)

T43p 2668H8U 2.13GHz 1GB Ram 15inch UXGA DVD Multi Burner IBM Atheros 5004X ABG
128MB ATI FireGL = (EPP Price: $2488+TX)

I plan on keeping the machine for 4-5 years.

Tough call for me!

Thanks!

Wow, I'm mad. I got quoted the H8U for $2655, EPP. I wonder whats up with that? I'm in the last stretch in my decision as well, and I'm 90% leaning towards the 43P. I think that it is not necessarily $500 better than 42, but because of the video card, ram speed, and fast hard drive ect, I think it will have another year, year and a half of longevity, and will perform better on the new windows.
T43p 2687EJU, 512+512 ram, 2ghz, 15 in UXGA, V3200, MultiBurn, ect.

Also, as we speak, my IBM guy is putting together an T43p 2687-EJU configuration for a quote. Although the custom models are a bit more expensive, this model has the 2.0 ghz rather than the 2.13. The peformance difference is slight, but the price difference is much, much steeper. Intel has always made their top of the line current processors overpriced slightly. I think that getting the 2.0 ghz on the T43p is essential if you want it to be competatively priced with a T42. Also from what I hear, the screens on the T43p's look better than on the T42s.

Hi Dukajoe,

I am not attached to 2.13GHz, just that this is the only model with everything else I wanted.

I am really curious about EJU. I believe it is an express open bay model. Where can I find all
its detailed specs, as they are not mentioned in TABOOK? If you have them,
do you mind sending them to me? Also how do you get it configured?

Thanks very much!

[censored], our education pricing sucks! The H8U according to the personal pages is $3,331.23. I feel like my personal pages must be busted, I don't think they're cutting me any deals here. Either that or they're just a hell of a lot worse than they were before.

 @ IBM
Great products at competitive prices!
Oh really?

Yeah, what I've learned from dealing with IBM is that it is most effective to deal with a human. I'm going to grad school @ alabama, and I have a representative, who, represents a certain number or category of schools, I suppose. It is strange how some peoples pricing is more or less than others, I dont understand how that works exactly. Still, I knew more about the models and their numbers than my rep did, and certainly a lot more about computers in general, so I had to tell him about the EJU. I learned about these particular hard to find models from the link that was in that sticky post from a long time ago--something like "before you configure your t43..." Anyone else remeber that? The link to those personal pages or someone else's personal pages should be posted somewhere, so that all of us can have a reference. Anyways, there is not one method to get your thinkpad configured; I had to use a combination of methods to recieve quotes. BTW, dont use that configuration program they have on their website; it sucks.

Ok, yeah now I want to find an EJU with 14.1" screen, exactly like the one that was just posted, just a 14.1" screen. Where is the list of these "open" models? Or do you have the "open bay" model number for a 14.1 SXGA+ screen?

Also, is there any way to tell (without calling) if that EJU model has the active hard drive protection system? It seems I can custom config that model on my personal page and the price is really good. It doesn't like me adding the enhanced warranties because I'm an educational customer, but it seems it will let me order it. If it has the hard drive system I may put through an order sooner than I thought. I can live with 15" :)

These links were posted by Roisin in the really long T43 Discussion
thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=6162
They contain all available T43/T43p models including the open
bay ones. Although the specs are not very detailed and may even
have some typos.

Thanks!

I'm right on the edge of ordering an EJU. I'll prob get it with 256 RAM and order upgrades from Crucial since it's way cheaper. As soon as I get an answer from the NY state guy about it I'll probably order.

I just wish I could double check that it has the active hard drive system, but I don't see info on that anywhere.

All T42 and T43 machines have the active hard drive protection, its built into the systemboards.
"An atheist is just somebody who feels about Yahweh the way any decent Christian feels about Thor or Baal or the golden calf. As has been said before, we are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further."

Yeah I've got that figured out now I guess. Their website just used to say "select models" and that's what had me confused. Tabook talks like its on everything though.

In the personal pages I chose the EJU and then "Add Options" and it lets me add hdd, Optical, RAM, wifi, etc.
