T series doesn't include 7.2K rpm hdd anymore?

#1 Post by cliff320 » Fri May 13, 2005 3:47 am

I was browsing on the IBM website and noticed that most of the T42 models have been delisted (unfortunately, one of them was the one I was really interested in buying at the end of the summer). More suprisingly, none of the t43 models 60 gb hdd's have the 7200 rpm speed harddrive. They do offer a 80 gb hitachi harddrive with that speed, will that drive possibly come standard in future t43 thinkpads?

This is kind of a non-related question, but do laptops that are produced now still say IBM or Levono? Thanks!

According to the April 2005 "tabook", the only 7200rpm drives are 60GB (60U) and only found in a select few T43's with the 15" screens. All the 80GB (80HS) drives are 5400rpm.

As of right now, I'm looking at getting a regular T43 w/80GB 5400rpm hdd & then buying the 7200rpm hdd after-market from newegg or whoever has the best deal. I'm going to get the 2nd hdd caddy that can be inserted in place of the optical drive, and mount the 80GB in that for backup & storage.

The 7K60 Hitachi Travelstar was a hair under $175 last time I looked.

EDu. site a Gold Mine for finding the most, advanced, models

#3 Post by Esteban » Fri May 13, 2005 3:33 pm

Regarding Thinkpads with 7200 rpm drives. It seemed to me that my Thinkpad, a T42 2373M3U, which has the fast drive was no longer offered. It couldn't be found looking it up as a part number on the regular Lenovo Thinkpad website.

Yesterday I again tried the IBM education website http://www.ibm.com/education/us I clicked on Student PC Purchases which opened to Lenovo's edu. website. Then clicked ThinkPad Notebooks. To see the widest range of models change Show Only to All Products and Sort List By to Product Code. Over 20 pages of Thinkpads were shown. Including, by a link, the M3U's description and ordering page.

The point of this is that models with advanced features like the 7200 rpm hard drive are still available, if you just know how to find them. Generaly not easy to do. The edu. website was the goldmine for finding the most models from IBM. Looks like it's one with Lenovo, too.

The best way to order any model is to find the one you like from tabook and call IBM.

It's a best known practice. Others will find it more convinient order through the web, then again, you can't blame the web for not showing the model you want/looking for.

Hitachi has just introduced the 7K10 series, available in not only 60, but also 80 and 100GB capacities. Perhaps IBM--um, Lenovo--is caught between.
