Random Fan Question

#1 Post by dukajoe » Sat May 14, 2005 3:20 pm

I have been reviewing the specs and reviews of all the T43 and T43ps out there, and it seems from what I have read that the 43p seems slightly more quiet than a regular t43. Please, disagree if you think otherwise based on experience.

My question is has anyone noticed a diffenece in fan noise between the 14.1 and 15 inch models, of either 42 or 43, not p or p?

I currently have a t42p, t43 and a t43p on my desk and the t43p is the noisiest one, next is the t43 and the most quiet one is the t42p(by quite a lot)

Iøve just chosen to keep the t42p instead of the t43p due to the noise issue.

T43p more heat then T43 , that make sense .
you did write on previous posts that it's the other way around.

"faster" video card + higher RPM hard drive will create more heat.

but people need to hear those fans and determine by that . and not by posts here about noisier or not. some people will consider that "nothing i cannot hear anything" and other "i cannot live with this". it's really hard to describe here.
in my case , i can hear it only if there total silent in the room. (i'm not crazy about it, but this is not big problem either) for me the benefits of this laptop are much bigger then the "problems".
Having PCI-X slot , better resale value, faster CPU/BUS speed, 14” with fingerprint/blue tooth model, are way over then this fan thing (that might change in the future too with newer bios as well).

if you going to hook it up to a cable instead of wireless then , you can forget about the fan issue.

just my opinion

Yeah, from everything I've heard, it seems like T43 noise is a bios problem, or something else thats ineffecient. If most things are turned off (like just word open), then something is wrong if the fan is *always* on. It should come on like a force of nature when playing doom, I understand. This may not be fixed in the first sixth months when they arive to buyers, but eventually when ibm or someone else finds a fix.

I know - That was how it sounded to me when i just got the machines, but after having them run for a few days i can see now that might initial believe isnt true.

I don't know if you've considered this already, but in the IBM Power Manager there are settings under the "Power Scheme" tab, that let you adjust for "Performance, System Temperature, and Fan Level". Was wondering if everyone is using the same settings, or has configured them differently.

I have a new T43 and it seems as quiet as my old T30. After running all day it is a bit hot on bottom. I have my settings "optimized for power source" and have 7 green bars for Performance, and 5 each for Temp & Fan (on AC power).

I tried all possible settings with that tool and it didnt make a difference.

In the BIOS you can also set the level to be "balanced" so it should be more quiet, but again - No difference.

Does anyone know how the T43p fan noise compares to the fan noise of an XPS Gen 1? That thing is very loud, as it is a desktop replacement. It has 3 fans. If the T43p is as loud as it is, I will not keep it. That is if it ever arrives. :D

I havent heard that machine but i dont think the thinkpad will be that loud. People need to remember that the T43P isnt loud in the normal way you understand loud. Juster louder than the T42's and loud enough to bother me if i work in a quiet place.

In the end it is a very subjective thing.
