Amongst websites, I always thought that CostCentral.com had the lowest prices. I bought both of my Thinkpads on ebay. My current T42, I got brand new sealed in the box on ebay for $1650. The lowest price I could find from an internet retailer was $1850. You'll get a better price on the internet, but returns can be problematic. I would make sure it is what you want. If you buy from IBM, you have a 30 day return period, but you'll pay more.

Definitely check with Bill, best computer purchase I've ever made. He went out of his way to be helpful, and the pixel check is an essential service that only he provides.

I did a lot of comparison shopping before purchasing my T43 and found (I thought) the best deals (non EPP, non Edu) at CostCentral.com. Then I checked Bill's list and found even a better deal of the computer that I was looking form. I bought from Bill and am very happy with the results.

Good buying experience is very important. Bill provides the "non-bad-pixel" policy is very considerate with reasonable price.

Buy a laptop in Europe.

#7 Post by B.W. Bos » Tue May 17, 2005 4:38 pm

What's the best place to buy a laptop in Europe? In The Netherlands at the local IBM websites the prices here are terrible. In Germany the prices are lower, but is there any difference between the NL/NU models and the GE models? The prices at Bill are good (better then in Europe) but than i have to pay local VAT (19%) + import. Any suggestion?

I think buy a Germany version is the lowest cost option for me, but what are the differences except the language?

Sorry for my bad Englisch!

There isnt any difference. The only difference(in 99% of the cases) between models from different countries are the keyboard and the language of the installed windows.

Im from denmark but just bought three thinkpads from germany for a very good price.

Get it from Bill. The price difference is so large that even after the 19% tax (there are no import taxes, only VAT nowadays) the price will be MUCH lower. The weak dollar definetely favours buying from the USA at the moment. If you really want to buy from Europe, Germany/Austria have pretty much the best prices you can get, but not worth it IMO. The only diff. will be the keyboard, which you can change if you really need for about 50 Euros (or you can swap with someone that needs the US but has a NL/GE keyboard)

I would love to buy from Bill, but unfortunately he does not offer express models...
