T42 vs T43 question

#1 Post by rxl77 » Mon May 16, 2005 2:59 pm

T42 or T43?

My dilemma: On Sunday I bought a T43 for $1,639 on IBM through EPP. It's specs are:

14.1 SXGA (1400x1050)
Centrino 1.86 ghz
Integrated fingerprint scanner
512 RAM
60GB @ 5400rpm
DVD-R Burner
64MB video card
extended 9 cell battery
3 year warranty

However, today I realized that the specs are overkill for what I need (regular travel, office applications, nothing killer, no gaming).

I can downgrade to the T42 (2379R1U), which is selling at $1,099, the specs are:

14.1 XGA (1024x768)
Centrino 1.6ghz
Integrated fingerprint scanner
256 RAM (I'll upgrade RAM myself later)
40GB @ 5400rpm
CDRW burner
32MB video card
6 cell battery
3 year warranty

The only reason I had bought the T43 was I wanted the 1400x1050 resolution screen. But thinking about it, everything else on the T43 is great, but I won't need it. 40GB is sufficient for my needs, I doubt I'll burn DVD's (plus it's not even dual layer) so the CDRW is good enough. I don't do any gaming, so 32MB is more than enough. Do you think I'll be okay if I get the T42 with the 1024x768 resolution? I like the 1400x1050, altho it is a tad small at times, but I can't ignore such a huge price differential of $540, which I can easily get an external DVD burner, and even upgrade the harddrive as well.

Am I going to regret not dropping the $540 extra for just the 1400x1050?

What would you do? Respond fast because I probably will need to change my order by today!

Is there another T42 model with a similar spec, but with SXGA?

Nope... they are all 1024's. I would have gotten a T42 with SXGA 1400x1050 if they had one, in a heartbeat.

What do you use now, or is this a new machine that you'll be using on the road? If you're used to the XGA resolution, I think it'll be a great machine and personally I'd get the T42. I use an XGA on a T23, and whilst I'd like SXGA screen, I'm now so used to XGA that I have no regrets. And that price really is very good!!!

I use a Dell Inspiron 4000 from 2001! It's a 14.1 XGA (1024x768). Yeah, I think I might just downgrade to the T42, since the T43 offers no substantial upgrades that I really need. And the T42 even has the fingerprint scanner... and both have 3 year warranties.

I actually just bought a laptop this past week from a 3rd party brand, but am going to return it. It's a 1400x1050. I guess tonight I will compare both screens next to each other and see if I can get used to the 1024x768. I'm kinda used to the 1400x1050 now after a week.

Still, extra $540 in my pocket will make me very happy.

Yes, there are T42 with SXGA+, but you will have to call IBM to order. It is not on the website anymore. However, seems like many of the T42 with 14" SXGA+ are backordered for several weeks.

2378FVU, is/was ~$1147 EPP, but comes with 1 year warranty. Upgrade the warranty to 3 years for $120. According to the tabook.pdf, this model is being withdrawn next month.

Or if you want a T43 with less features but similar to the 2378FVU, check out 266846U for about ~$13xx EPP, with standard 3 year warranty. Seems to be more readily available.

See the tabook.pdf for all the other models.

Also, the T will be my main computer, I won't be taking it on the road that much. Maybe a few times a month.

And I will be getting the docking station for $139 (with extra charger) on either the T42 or the T43 system, as it will be my main computer.

check out the t42 m1u or m2u....report here if they are still available...i have the m3u and it is exactly what you want. I order in April and it came 3 days from HK after i order

When you call in, ask for the price of couple of models too, it may help other people to see the price drop.

Thanks

Hey,
I tried calling, but after half hour I gave up. I think I'm going to just stick to this laptop, the T43.

Thanks.

Just wondering why people don't seem to be looking at this model T43? It has SXGA+ screen and 64mb video memory with 3 year warranty for under $1600. http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840

I just check the website. The price of some T43 models have dropped. I noticed the T43P G2U have dropped 200$ at least.

Yeah, prices on the IBM's all dropped today. I went with the T43 2687D3U, and now I need to get a price adjustment from IBM. Price adjustment should be good since they haven't even shipped it yet, still says "in process" on the order status website.

Yeah I'm having adjustments made to my order. Too bad this doesn't mean I can get a 14" now with the specs I want for less than my 15 :(.

Very strange that the best deal between CTO and express models was to do a CTO 15" to get everything I wanted and needed.

Hey, I just got a T43 under EPP -- 26684DU T43/512/40GB-5400/XSGA+/intel BG -- ordered 3 May, $1,364.35.

Did the price drop for this too? What's the new price please!

Love the 1400x1040! One dark pixel :( has shown up, but it didn't show -- or I missed it -- when I ran screen tests initially.

thanks,
JD
