question about t43

I just got my new t43 and had a question about the attachment between the computer keyboard and screen on the left side. There seems to be an exposed area covered by what looks like a cheap flimsy piece of black plastic (kinda looks like black electrical tape) between the keyboard and the computer. Do other people's laptops look like this also, or is there a cover that is missing in my computer?

They all look like this. As far as i know it's the cable to the screen which goes from the motherboard

Thanks. I am assuming it would not be wise to spill water in that area. Looks somewhat dangerous
